The Role
It was a really great experience to have before starting to work in an industrial environment. It has allowed me to have a better view on work life and what you can expect in the future. I really enjoyed myself working at MSD. It was exciting to be involved in new and different things throughout my placement year.
I had the opportunity to contribute by voicing out my ideas/opinions and they were considered by my colleagues. At times, I was allowed to make a decision regarding a project and I have been entrusted with small projects.
If I faced any problems or had trouble with certain matters, it was easy to approach my supervisor or anyone of my colleagues. They were willing and happy to help.
This varies depending on the individual. The task at hand would be given to me and I was allowed to draw up my own schedule depending on how I wanted to do it. However, it was important to set myself a deadline to complete the task as well and not take up a large amount of time working on the task. There was always something new to work on and I loved that aspect of it.
The project that I was assigned to when I started my placement was my main responsibility. Along with that, there were other smaller projects that were assigned to me throughout the year. So it was crucial to plan out the various things I had to do in order to maintain a balance. The responsibilities I was issued with, I was in charge of. But I was also able to consult with my supervisor on matters that I was not sure about.
I have been able to improve my basic skills of working in a team, being able to present professionally, communicating with people in an industrial environment, planning my time and working efficiently. These skills will help when it comes to applying for a job in the future as now I know what is expected of me in an industry.
The Company
It was always great fun in the office. Everyone is very close to each other and it is like a family. Every month there was a dinner with my colleagues and this helped in getting to know them better.
It was well organised as I knew what my aims and objectives of my projects were. Also, I knew what was expected of me during my year at MSD. Everything was set up and ready for me to start when I first joined the company.
I was given the required training necessary before I started any work.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
It would be a great opportunity to continue working with MSD.
The Culture
The placement students from the different departments would have lunch together and catch up on the events of the day. During the weekends or after work there would be outings that were planned.
Hoddesdon is a pretty small place and so most of the socialising was either done in London as it was only 30 min away by train or in Ware/Hertford that was nearby by bus. The cost of living is not too bad and it is convenient to live with other placement students (ie. House share) as it helps with the sharing of the rent.
It was better to go into London or nearby towns by train.
There were activities to participate in with your colleagues from work or with the other placement students.
