The Role
I enjoyed my placement in terms of I had responsibility and it was a real job.
My opinions I had were always listened to and if I had any questions I know I would get an answer straight away.
I had weekly/fortnightly 'desk reviews' whereby you discuss any problems you have or disucss how your getting on. It's not just placements that do this, this is wide spread throughout the compnay.
At the start it was a new job role so I wasn't that busy, but over time I had peaks of being busy and then some times had moments where it was quiet.
I was given the responsibility of reporting one of our business ventures in detail and reporting across all our sites we have. Without me doing this, this work would not get done and managers wouldn't know what is going on in the business in terms of cost reduction in which I was responsible for reporting.
Throughly recomend going on placement as you learn so much! Only thing that lacks is, everything I learn at uni doens't contribute to my job role. Skills I have developed which will assist me in my future degree is being able to absorbe a lot of information in one go, as you need to be able to understand what is being said and you don't want to keep asking 'what, how etc'.
The Company
Very relaxed. People are willing to lend a hand, however during the first week of the month that's when everyone is so busy so there's not much interaction in these periods. There is a lot of engagement in terms of everyone knows what's going on in terms of the business news and there's always food in the office which is always a bonus!
As this was a new placement for my job role, the amount of work I had wasn't enough so I had to keep asking for work, and at the beginning becuase your knew, people are reluctant to give you work. As time went on I was getting more and more work, and overall it was generally organised well.
I was given the opportunity to shadow other peoples jobs, get involved in any training materials and was able to enhance my skills.
Company Parties/Events
Since I have been here there has been at least 3 promotions, which shows there is scope to improve and employees do get noticed and move up the grade barriers..
The Culture
Unfortuntaly, althought there were other placements in the same office, they were'nt very sociable. There were other placements in other departments, so I mainly socialised with them. In terms of work socials, there wasn't as many as I would like. Being part of the social comitte, I organised monthly events but colleagues said this was too much, for a student this is shocking to hear.
Cost of living was fairly average, bit less than you would pay at University, however due to being in a city, drinks prices were a bit pricy. Doing your food shop, you would need a car as where things are located it isn't great. You can use public transport , but it is hassel getting to and from places and you'll need to get 2 busses to places sometimes.
I think it has potential with the right people, but for me it was nothing compared to University.
There were a lot of activities to get involved in outside of work, there are so many clubs and the gym is pretty cheap as well.
