The Role
It was great to get experience from a globally recognised company like Intel. My placement has given me the opportunity to develop and improve on a wide range of personal skills, and also the opportunity to then apply these skills to real life situations which hold a lot of responsibility. Further the experience of being an intern alongside 50 + others makes it that more enjoyable.
I felt highly valued by the team that I worked in, from day one I was treated just like a full time employee in that team would be been and not treated differently because I was an intern. Was Also trusted with business critical tasks on a weekly basis so my work was never under appreciated. In regards to the social side i was attended and organised social events with my team which makes you fit right in,
Support and guidance were available at all times, your supervisor/manager would be your main point of contact and are there to help with any questions regarding your day-day tasks, personal development and so on. Further mentors are assigned (who are managers from other departments) to each intern - great networking opportunity.
There are days where I am very busy and there are days where I am less busy. Most days are well balanced, I have time to complete my tasks and take regular short breaks to stretch my legs and have a drink or a casual chat. Like any place of work the beginning of the internship was busier however after i got to grips with my monthly tasks I had alot more spare time to get involved in other projects and take on more work.
You are given a lot of responsibility as an intern and if you were not doing your job they would have to hire someone else to fill your space, hence I was challenged by the amount of responsibilities I was given. However, with support from my team, this was something that I got used to quickly. Also as the placement is for a duration of 13 months, the first month is spent with your predecessor and is refereed to as the handover period.
I feel that the skills I have developed will be of great use and advantage in my future career. I have definitely improved a wide range of skills such as my personal skills, time management, excel, communication, problem solving and team working skills which will definitely help in my future jobs. Further this year has allowed me to realise my biggest strengths and weakness, which is great for self development purposes.
The Company
It's a very relaxed atmosphere. As in any place of work, when schedules are tight, pressure increases a bit and the environment becomes a little bit more hectic, with people trying to complete their work. 99% of the time, everyone is very happy, chatting, relaxed and doing their job in the best way, you still have a joke about and enjoy spending time in the workplace. It's fun, enjoyable and everyone is helpful. Dress code is smart casual with dress down Fridays and none of the managers have offices so it is quite open.
The intern programme at Intel has been going on for 20+ years therefore it is extremely organised with inductions, catch up calls, events for interns. The internship starts off with a 1 month handover period where the intern you would be replacing teaches you all you need to know i.e your daily tasks, excel training, introducing you to the different teams and also gives you the opportunity to ask as many questions you may have about work. There is also an open day before we started which enabled us to meet the other interns and find people to live with.
Intel invest a huge amount in personal training and development, they way they see it is if you know more you can do more to help, there is a range of face-to-face training sessions, and ongoing online and mobile training sessions available. There is always training out there for anyone to undertake and a vast amount of resource online. There is a huge focus on personal development in the companies culture which also helps .

See this as a 13 Month Interview, Intel seems to put alot of emphasis on their interns, some of the managers now at Intel have come from the Intern Programme. The downside is that they do not have a set graduate scheme like many other companies, but when positions open interns are generally at the top of the list for them. Places are therefore competitive so if you want to return put the work in it is more than possible.
The Culture
There was a great social scene amongst fellow Interns. With around 50+ interns based at my location there was always lots of social get together and nights out. Intel has various committees such as the sports and social committee who organise various events throughout the year from pub golf to go-karting.
Cheap, Cheap and Cheap......... Rent is on average 250-350pcm which compared to university it is incredibly cheaper. In regards to food, the canteen at work is subsidized, you can have a filling breakfast at work for less than £1. Further drinks, milk and fruit are free at work. Socialising is a big part of the placement so it is quite costly eating out and attending lots of events - but definitely worth it.
Not much going on at Swindon at night, so if you are looking for quite nights Swindon is perfect. However if you have the right people i am sure u can find things to do, Swindon has its owns Ice Rink, Football pitches, Go-karting center plus if you like shopping you will like the outlet center.
Yes most definitely. Wide range of activities were going on all the time as there is a large student community there will be alot of interns who share the same interests . Intel have also various committees such as sports and social, charity and publishing so there is always things going on and to get involved in.
