The Role
Had a really good time. Work was enjoyable and stimulating and it helped that there was such a large group of students (>100 on our site) also on placement at the same time.
Got on well with people who worked nearby. In the second half of my time I felt like my input and work was well valued
I was given excellent training and support was always there when I needed it.
There was certain times when lab-work ebbed and flowed but most of the time, since I planned my own day, it was well balanced.
Was left to work independently and make independent decisions on the direction of my project from early on. The project was more focused on technology development and was subsequently not critical to business targets so there wasn't a massive pressure.
Fantastic training and skill sets developed which will really assist me in my final year laboratory project and for PhD applications
The Company
It was a large hot-desking office which contained the whole department. Was good for gauging the heartbeat of the department. Occasional chatter and joke but mostly professional
Clear project was in place from the outset and the company were very experienced in running this type of scheme and it showed.
Received all the necessary lab training when required, people were more than happy to dedicate hours of their working day to train you. Also presentation sessions were set up for us to learn about different parts of the company, we also had multiple presentation training opportunities for our own presentation skills.

The Culture
Better than my second year of university! There were over 100 students at our site alone which meant loads of organised social events and busy weekends. Events included boat parties, black tie events and regular 50-seater coaches booked for nights out. Loved it!
I was based in Stevenage so it was pretty average, maybe housing was a bit higher due to the proximity to London
Stevenage and Hertfordshire are terrible places for nightlife, after an average selection of pubs there is one club in Stevenage. It is only 20 mins on the train into London however.
Went to the gym after work or would go out on the weekend so was to busy to look.
