The Role
Working with GSK has been a brilliant experience, all employees have been very friendly and welcoming and the work has been interesting too. Ultimately, I have really enjoyed my time here.
Whilst working at GSK I did not feel like a student, I felt like a fellow employee. I was not treated in anyway that differed from full time staff and my opinions were always welcomed, resulting in me feeling extremely valued by colleagues.
My manager has been a brilliant support this year. Whilst ensuring that I have the opportunity to learn to be reliant on myself, I have been given the opportunity to get support whenever required. I feel that my managers support has resulted in imporvements in key life skills that will be applicable in the work place. I have been fully supported all year long.
Workload varied day to day. But ultimately, the balance was perfect. There was never 'nothing' to do, as if you finished your projects, there was always some futher research you could carry out, or a collegue would always be glad for that extra pair of hands.
I was given lots of responsibility whilst at GSK and found myself to be treated like a full time member of staff, and not as a student. I was able to lead my own projects with support from collegues, whilst able to make important buisness decisions.
I have gained so many useful skills whilst working at GSK. Skills include scientific writing, research skills, lab skills as well as many other life skills such as communication and team working. Some of these skills I did not have before working at GSK, and those that I did have have improved noticably since I started my placement. In terms of skills, this year has been very useful.
The Company
The atmosphere was great! I worked in a department with 5 fellow students and collegues who were all passionate about there jobs. Working with both students and full time staff also meant the atmosphere was really good. Quite often there would be events running in our office to lighten the mood.
The work placement was organised very well. All of the students in out department were put in contact with eash other and the current students before we joined GSK to help to understand what working at GSK would be like, whilst being able to organise housing and getting to know each other before the placement started. Once work started, there were clear positions for all of us within the department, and the year ran very smoothly.
The company invested a lot of time and money into the students personal training and development. This could have been time spent training us in different techniques, how to use equipment etc, or money spent sending us to factorys, conferences, or training seminars to increase our knowledge. The company paid for us to take part in courses which resulted in us achiving qualifications which will be useful throughout our career.

I would love to have come back to GSK - However there are now no new roles in my department so I cannot do this.
The Culture
The social scene was brilliant, living in London is ideal! There were parties for christmas, meals for birthdays, random nights out, football matches, trips into london, work trips to brewaries and factorys.
Work events were paid for by the companies, which was great! However London is expensive... but we are getting paid for our placements, and we all made the most of this! However, it is still possible to save quite a bit of money.
The nightlife near GSK house was not brilliant, however a 10 minute train ride results in pleanty of pubs. 30 minutes and your in central london. The nightlife couldn't be much better than that.
I lived in London for the year, there was so much to get involved in. I was basically a tourist for the year. But other people got involved in the gym, there were 5-a-side football matches I played in. Virtually every week there is something new you can get involved in in London
