The Role
Great insight into the world of work and how a successful, global company is run. Really good experience to understand how the different departments integrate and work together to be as efficient and productive as possible.
Very fortunate to work with a great bunch of people who made the 9-5 job enjoyable.
I didnt have the most supportive manager, this was a learning curve in itself to prepare me for future managers and the different ways that people work.
My job working in sales operations for the field sales representatives was very full on as I contstantly had large projects to work on as well as the ad hoc requests from the reps. I never had nothing to do! I would rather be busy than bored though so I wasnt complaining.
I was made responsible for major operations that would have major impacts on the sales reps day to day roles if they went wrong. I was given much more responsibility than I was expecting to be given on a placement year working in a large firm. This was great experience.
I feel my placement year has prepared me for work/life after graduating. I will go into assessment centres/interviews confidently, with plenty of scenarios/examples to base competency based questions on. I am so happy with my decision to go on a placement year.
The Company
GSK has a great culture and is a people focused firm. The atmosphere around the office is chilled (not casual wear though) and everyone seems to enjoy working together - it is set up as hot desking so you can mix up who you sit next to.
Placement students at GSK arent treated as students, we are given job titles that others are employed here as full time roles.
There was not much focus on this. we didnt review/reflect my job back to my degree or placement year requirements - i just got on with my job.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
i would come back to GSK for a full time job however I would be open to other jobs elsewhere to broaden my knowledge and skills set first. I love the culture of the company and the feel of the office.
The Culture
yes, in the summer everyone would go to the pub down the road after work for drinks on thursdays/fridays
i house shared with other placement students working at gsk. we spent £500 pcm which was affordable given my placement year salary
public transport meant we could go out easily and get home via nightbus
living in london there are obviously endless opportunities as to what clubs/activities you can get involved in!
