The Role
Overall I extremely enjoyed my placement at Fujitsu. It was very challenging, but interesting at the same time. I would recommend the company to anyone applying for a placement.
After the first month, I was treated like a Service Delivery Manager, not a placement student! I had the same responsibilities as the other SDMs who had been at Fujitsu for years. Throughout the year on a number of different occasions, colleagues asked for my advice, colleagues listened to my opinion and on some occasions asked for my help. I therefore felt extremely valued within the team.
Throughout my first week, my line manager looked after me very well. I was introduced to all of the different members of the team and given the basic background knowledge behind the team’s roles. Throughout the whole year, I felt like I could go to any member in the team and ask for help/guidance. Everyone was very supportive and happy to help.
Throughout the year I had a number of very busy days when I was constantly busy for the whole working day. However at certain times of the year, there was less to do, so I found myself not having as many tasks to complete.
I had a number of responsibilities as a ‘service delivery manager’. The majority of my time was spent on being the project manager for a number of small projects (usually involving installations or equipment moves). When I was asked to take on a project, I had the full responsibility from scheduling receipt of the equipment, through to collecting the Delivery Certificate once the project had been completed. Some of these projects were fairly simple and went through the whole process within about 2 weeks, however others took a number of months. I was also responsible for a number of other tasks including, to putting together monthly finances for the last month, dealing with a number of complaints/escalations we received, prepare stock reports etc.
There are a number of new skills I have developed which will help me in my final year of uni and future jobs. Such as, Experience of teamwork and development of interpersonal skills, Built Customer/Client Relationships, Gaining an insight into the way organisations operate and the challenges they face etc
The Company
The atmosphere was fairly relaxed within the office. The team were very easy to socialise with during breaks from working.
The industrial placement scheme was extremely organised. The structure of the scheme was made very clear since day one. My line manager had planned a very useful introduction for me, which took place over my first few weeks.
There was a number of different training courses available to me both online and face to face. I took part in a number of these and the company was happy to pay.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
I would definitely return to Fujitsu, There are a number of different Graduate roles which they offer.
The Culture
Fujitsu had around 20 placement students, there were a number of social events that were organised. However, out of all of the placement students, I was the only one based in my site, I would have preferred to have at least 1 or 2 other placement students as the people I worked with on a day to day basis were a lot older than myself.
I lived at home throughout the year and commuted into London. The cost of living in London would have been extremely high If I rented a place closer to work.
The nightlife in London is really good! There is a countless number of places you can go to. The only issue is the price. London on the is extremely expensive, as a placement student, you cannot afford to go out in London very often.
There are a number of sports society's which anyone can join. There was also the CSR challenge which all placement students took part in. I have talked about this in more detail below.
