The Role
There is a really nice community of interns in the office I am located at. I have, for the most part, enjoyed the work throughout my placement and have expanded my network within the company.
I have been given positive feedback throughout my time at IBM by various members of the team I work in, along with some constructive feedback for areas to improve. This has been extremely helpful for developing my skills and techniques over my 12 month placement.
My task manager works from home, but is contactable everyday by phone, email or instant messaging. My first few weeks I was guided through my role by the previous intern.
Most of the time I'll have something to work on- in any spare time I get I can take part in volunteering (community activities and helping out in school), find out more about joining IBM as a full time employee after my placement, or shadow full time employees.
I was given a fairly high level of responsibility straight away, which has only increased over my placement. I have enjoyed this aspect of the placement as it has made me feel that I have really accomplished something.
I'm studying mathematics at university, so although I have developed my ability in Excel and my role is orientated around analysis, I don't feel I have used a great deal of my current degree knowledge. However, I think the placement year has helped me to better understand the applications of mathematics in a business environment, which IS useful for future job applications.
The Company
There are quite a few interns that I work around so, although I'm working, there is someone to talk to/ ask questions about tasks/ socialise with. There are also full time employees in the office, some of which are managers of the interns that are very helpful if you get stuck with anything.
The placement scheme at IBM is very well organised, with a large community of placement students, gap students, apprentices and graduates. All interns have a task manager and early professional's manager- so you're never out of options for someone to talk to about problems related to work, or outside of work.
There are free online training courses available that anyone can enrol in. There are also sessions organised specifically for placement students, gap student and apprentices around presentation skills, employability skills, CV workshops, etc.

Graduate roles are available at IBM which provide a step up straight after completion of a degree. There are a fairly wide variety of roles available, which I have been able to find more about whilst on placement.
The Culture
I commute into the central London office about once a week where there are a wider variety of activities to do after work, though at my office there are a few pubs round the corner that we occasionally go to after work. There are also sports clubs you can join at IBM (similar to at uni).
I lived at home, but the housing outside of London is a little less pricey than in. There is a cinema complex not too far away from the office that has come in handy!
Been out a few times- other interns have been out more frequently.
Yes- plenty. There are plenty of gyms around and other things to do wherever you stay.
