The Role
Day to day life at work was fun. Although the work was challenging, I was given a large degree of freedom and this was a huge motivator for me. The other placement students were very friendly and the group of us all got on very well, meeting up regularly outside of work.
Although all members of staff were very nice and welcoming, there was always the knowledge that the placement was only short term.
We rarely saw our manager but did have contact with other members of staff regarding our projects
Some days were busier than others, but in general, there was always work to be getting on with but never too much to feel overwhelmed
Given the nature of the work, the level of responsibility involved was fairly slight. We were not working on active products or with real customers, but were working within a department where sensitive work occurs.
Extra work experience is always a good thing, and especially for the type of career I want this placement was very helpful as I was undertaking technical work in a team environment.
The Company
The placement group for the department I was in basically had their own office, and as such, the atmosphere was always fun with the ability to take some time out and have a cup of tea and a chat whenever, not forgetting the weekly cake fridays, which were as good as they sound.
Much of the placement introduction and wind-down was geared towards interns working in other departments, so for them I'm sure the organisation was good, however, for our team, much of the non-work activities were somewhat irrelevant.
One day training assessment centre at the end of the placement, nothing else by way of training.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Only one intern from the whole site (about 20 of us) got a job with them afterwards so I'm not quite sure what went wrong there!
The Culture
Fellow students were generally friendly and outgoing and there were many extra activities undertaken such as paintball and nights out.
Reasonably, nothing that I noticed to be either overly cheap or expensive.
It's Ipswich, so there were a few clubs, but nothing to write home about.
There were opportunities for sports clubs and as mentioned, many social activities were organised by the current graduates.
