The Role
I really enjoyed working for BT, its a company i thoughht i would never see myself working within. However after experiencing a placement i feel this has opened my eyes to a career in the telecommunications industry.
Working remotely from my immidiate team brought with it alot of challenges and benefits. But they made me feel welcome and were really supportive taking into account that I was still a undergraduate student and also allowing me the time i required to work on my university assignments.
My line manager was fantastic really supportive and helpful. was always there for me if i had any questions at all. Understood my situation and was more than happy to arrange for me to go to his site and work the odd day if i felt i was getting out of my depth or needed a face to face.
Working with people all over the country and people who were also working on other projects at time i could have been busy, but there is always people running other projects for me to jump in on and get involved. I beleive on a placement year you make your own workload as in the fact that always make sure you ave something to do.
All the projects i were involved in were owned by me, I took them from early ideas (chat at the coffee machine) to planning implimenting and tracking the projects, it was my responsibility to make sure they were delivered.
Being thrown into a highly professional environment, meant that i was picking up skills and ways of working i have never been faced with before. I feel the experiences and knowledgei have gained on my placement will be with me for life.
The Company
the atmosphere in the office was one of commitment and delivery however the guys all knew how to kick back and relax. But we were all aware of why we were there.
I was one of the last placement students to be accepted onto the Bt scheme. It felt a bit rushed and last minute, however i made it to my first day and im still here now. So those early hickups are long forgotton now.
They invested alot in terms of providing me with the tools for my progression and an environment that allowed me to learn and develop. With BT being a global company with a well renowned graduate scheme i had no issues that there undergraduate placements would be superior to others in the industry.

The Culture
i was the only placement student on my site, however i interacted well with the young lads and lasses working on the phones in the call centre as they were more my age.
The cost of living and socialising was ok, it can always be better for anyone anywhere
