The Role
I enjoyed my placement year at IBM quite a lot, although it did have its highs and its lows - but that can be expected anywhere!
I did feel really valued by my colleagues. I was recognised for what I was good at, and word got around my team and I often had people from other teams reaching out and asking for my assistance.
At the beginning I was given an appropriate amount of support and guidance but as time got on and I got more settled into my role, I was often expected to find the answer to things myself which was quite difficult at times.
I was set weekly tasks to do and I received ad-hoc requests. Other than that, I had to find work for myself or bring some ideas to my managers for future projects for me to work on.
I was given quite a lot of responsibility in owning a piece of work or part of a project I was working on.
The skills I learnt will stick with my for life, both in the workplace and personal skills I developed.
The Company
I worked in a European team so I did not sit with my team, nor have physical interaction with them at any point during my placement. I spent the vast majority of my time in the office sitting with other interns, which had a great social atmosphere, though I am slightly disappointed overall.
It was very well set up and structured by IBM.
IBM held a lot of networking days, workshops, education sessions etc that really did invest in us - both our professional and our personal skills.

I'd say it has an excellent intern/graduate community which will help you to settle into your role. It is an exciting company to work for and I hope to return after I graduate.
The Culture
There are quite a large number of interns so it's hard to keep up with everyone and you'll find yourself making friends with smaller circles but overall the social scene is great.
London is a very expensive area to live, especially if you choose to live in central London.
Really good places to go out around the area.
IBM offers you the chance to get involved in many voluntary activities which are outside of your day to day role.
