The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement and it has been a worth while experience.
I felt as though I was a part of the department, I was given my own responsibilities and opportunities to work with people as well.
My manager and supervisors gave me support when needed and also offered me any assistance without my request.
Every day varied in terms of work load but generally each day was varied and full of different tasks.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility in my placement, however I also had the support from supervisors to ensure that if I did make a mistake these were monitored and did not become "fatal".
Taking this placement year has helped me out greatly. I have gained a greater understanding of engineering technicality as well as growing in confidence and building working relationships with people.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was fairly relaxed and there were a great amount of jokes and "banter" thrown around. In high pressured times it was more serious.
The placement was very well organised by Vauxhall with the first two weeks dedicated to a handover period where the current undergrad shows the new one their roles and responsibilities. You also move into halls for this period so you can get to know the other new undergrads in all three locations. There are social activities in the evenings similar to freshers.
There were various training courses throughout the year. Some of these however were delayed so I wasn't able to put them to practice until fairly late into my placement.
Although there are 80 undergrads there are only about 10 graduates amongst the tree locations so a graduate role is fairly rare.
The Culture
As there are so many undergrads there are always people going out.
The cost of living was reasonable and the rent cheap.
In Luton there is not much in terms of night life however there is a Yates and a few pubs.
In the plant the undergrads take part in a community project called "Vans'R'Us" which happens once a month. We go to local schools in the area and teach them about manufacturing. This makes a good day out of the office.
