    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The IBM Extreme Blue is fantastic. You get the opportunity to take control of a real project with access to all of IBM's resources, you develop some fantastic skills especially in presentation and the whole this is a huge amount of fun.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • There are few people officially involved with the Extreme Blue projects since they want you to have independence to allow you to express your ideas. Those few people who are involved are always very excited about the project. That being said, you often need another person's skills set from within IBM and they almost always got fully behind the project.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The reason I haven't given this a 10 is that as I said previously, they want to give you independence. They are fantastically helpful, but sometimes it is better for you to work it out on your own.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • You will be very busy!!! You work out your own work schedule, but if you make it on to the internship expect to be surrounded by people who will want to stay up nights getting the project completed.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I wasn't running the show, but as a team we were. The tagline for the internship was run your own business for 12 weeks and that is certainly what it felt like.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I study Engineering and I have learnt so much about what actually goes on inside a real business, that you could never learn out of a text book. It has also shown me which career I do want to pursue now, I think you need this experience to have a clearer picture of the business world when doing assignments during your degree and also the career path you want to take.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Friendly and welcoming, I was based at one of the smaller offices at Manchester, so I could get to know other employees there quite well

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The structure of the internship was excellent. Training for the first we days and then they let you get on with it with some organised presentation along the way. The trip to Nice for the European Expo was also very well handled and expenses were paid promptly.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • If you needed help it was always there and you had access to all the resources you wanted. But this internship was about developing you skills in a team and in a presentation. Other firms may spend more money on actual training exercises, but I thin you learn more from the experiences in an internship like this.

    4/5

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Everyone was so much fun and the drive and determination in the office was infectious. Living together also develops strong bonds.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Not very expensive, reasonable northern prices.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife is in Manchester city centre around 20 minutes for the office location in Sale. The nightlife in Manchester is great!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes many! For example, charity work, LGBT and many external events created by the company.
