    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the environment and the people, but I would say that an Analytical Chemist job was not the best for me.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was incorporated very well into the group and made to feel at home automatically

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Management were there when I needed them, but they left it to supervisors to do the day to day help.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Certain weeks were far busier than others due to the high and low production levels, so some days got quite hectic, and some days were slower. The majority of the time things were reasonably balanced.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • GSK operate under harsh auditing systems, so all new employees (student or otherwise) have to be trained fully (and slowly) so spent a lot of time learning.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Laboratory techniques and experience were invaluable, though I would say that it wasn't the best placement for my theoretical knowledge

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The majority of the people were very sociable, and the group I was in had a lot of fun; it was enjoyable.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It could have been better, as it felt like I was a normal employee and not able to experience all the different aspects of the job.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • GSK were willing to offer me every possibility going, even to the extent that I got an extra training course and qualification whilst there, like what a normal employee would get. Sometimes when time was limited it was not recommended, but if there was something you really wanted, you could push for it.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Above 25 days holiday

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Analytical chemist jobs are rare within the company as it is down-sizing, so the fututre opportunities are not great, especially as the site I worked on will be closed by 2012!! However, the placement will give me a better chance of getting a job with GSK than if I didn't do it.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I played sport with some of my group and with other employees on the site which was good. I was very good friends with the two other placement students on the site, as we trained together at the start for three weeks; am still in touch with them afterwards.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 0/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 0/5
