The Role
I really enjoyed my placement at IBM. IBM is such a great company with a wide range of knowledge and being able to work in the Southbank office was a great experience. Not many people at the age of 20 get to work in central london.
From day one I was never referred to as an "intern". This made me very happy. I was always considered a valued member of the team and this allowed me to develop further learning of many people around me. Everyone seems to be treated equally which is great.
My Manager was superb. A great help and a great inspiration. Always willing to help with any problems I had and very approachable. She never referred to me as an intern which was great. Being in such a senior position she was a great person to shadow.
IBM has a great mixture of direct work hours and indirect. around 70% of the working day is dedicated to your job role whilst in the other 30% you are encouraged to do some work outside of your direct job role. This allows you to learn more about yourself and the business.
Like I said above, from day one I was never considered as an intern. I was given responsibilities similar to my teammates from day one. Work that is done for senior management across Europe. It was great to be trusted in this way.
The skills that I learn in this placement will be of great help in the professional environment. Some of them will help towards my degree but mostly will help in future jobs. It was a great placement to set myself up for future work.
The Company
With is being such a big office, with other 120 interns in the Southbank office alone there were always people to socialise with. This along with my immediate team meant that I was never bored. It was always such a great atmosphere.
IBM are very good at preparing you for the placement. With a 2 day induction in Portsmouth with the other interns followed by a handover period with the placement student you take over from meant that I was fully prepared for the placement.
IBM has a wide range of training available to all employees. As previously said around 30% of your time at the company is devoted to work outside off your direct role meaning there is always a chance to learn off other people.

By doing an internship at IBM it does not mean you will get offered a job. All placement students have to apply back to IBM for a graduate role and although your feedback does contribute to the decision you still have to go through the application process.
The Culture
With over 120 placement students in Southbank alone there are always people who are willing to socialise. I joined the intern football team who played in a league and against the graduate football team. i also went on the IBM ski trip which was great.
As I was in the London the cost of living and socializing was very high. Although it was definitely worth it! You may aswell make the most of your year in London as you may not get the chance to again! IBM also give London allowance which helps.
The Southbank office is right on the river meaning in the summer there are lots of nice bars to go to. Also in the winter there are cool inside bars to go to. It is close to covent garden, leicester square, picadilly circus and much more areas that have excellent nightlife.
there are lots of things to get involved in I joined the intern football team who played in a league and against the graduate football team. i also went on the IBM ski trip which was great. All these activities are encouraged which is great as you get a real team spirit.
