About You
I really enjoyed it, it was a very interesting, stimulating experience and gave me, a non-law student, a huge amount of insight both into the commercial law industry and Allen and Overy itself.
There isn't really a huge amount a company like this can really do to make you feel like you've done a useful job as you're there to learn, just for an insight day, but all the staff were wonderful, helpful, approachable and friendly.
Loads, there was constantly people on hand to answer any questions and support to show us where we needed to be and explain what would be next.
I hope it will help me to get a career in commercial law and law itself when I come to graduate and do a conversion. I enjoyed it so much it proved to me how much I would like a career at a firm like this
The Company
Very well structured, there was a good programme with lots of netowrking sessions and a chance to shadow some of the trainees. Lunch was also delicious (!) but the sessions were very helpful and ensured we learnt a lot during our time there.
It was quite a serious day, but like I've said the staff there were lovely and always available to have a chat with and joke around. The other students there were also very nice and the atmosphere overall was very good.
I think the firm did everything they could to make sure we got a full insight into what it does as a company and what the actual industry is like to work in. They gave us a variety of workshops and talks to listen to and overall it was a very fulfilling experience.
Yes, the shadowing sessions were useful for this and the trainees were fairly honest about what hard work it is to work there, but how rewarding it is too. I think it's a little difficult to get a complete overview of a full-time job in just one day though.
Once again, I feel like this is quite difficult to get across in just one day, but the company did as much as they could to introduce us to the lawyers and trainees that do work there.
Highly useful. As a history student, I previously knew very little about the commercial law industry and this day at A&O cemented for me what I hope will be a dream career in commercial law. I got a taste for the work involved and the kind of commitment that is expected and it is the kind of thing I relish.
Everything Else
My travel expenses were reimbursed very shortly after my attendance.
Yes, lots of opportunities to meet trainees and partners and ask them questions about their line of work, what they enjoy and particularly important for me personally, how much travelling they get to do.
They were very good, it was largely meeting trainees over lunch, which was good as it gave an informal atmosphere to the sometimes awkward situation of questioning someone you know very little about.
Yes, there are multiple activities the firm offers for a greatly reduced price, such as the gym, pool etc.
Yes, I thought it was a really useful day to get to know the company and the industry and a brilliant idea for someone even vaguely considering commercial law.
