The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement, it has been the best year of my life. There was always things to do and get involved in with the intern community, most of which contributes to the community in some way so you're having fun and helping the community at the same time!
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues, I was given so much responsibilities and asked to lead so many projects with customers that I felt as if I was really needed and the work that I did really made a difference to our customers experience here at Microsoft. My colleagues also paid for drinks and meals when we went out which was a real bonus!
My manager was fantastic! It was the first year he had taken on the responsibility of an Intern Manager, although he had worked closely with the previous interns, and he was extremely supportive to me and everything that I wanted to do. From day one he was pushing opportunities my way so that I could get the most out of my placement.
I was reasonably busy on a daily basis. As with every business there were quite periods and busy periods. The bonus to my placement was that during the extremely quite periods where we had no customers due in for several weeks, I was given the opportunity to work with a different part of the company on some massive projects and was actually given lead developer on some projects!
I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement. I was the first point of contact for customers who wished to use our facilities and I worked closely with partners to set up workshops to help sell Microsoft products. On the opportunities outside out of my role I was given lead developer of a start up project which felt great!
I have learnt so much during my placement. My placement revolved around a technical aspect that I hadn't touched on at all during my degree. The training I received has really helped me gain a greater understanding of the business area and helped develop my confidence too.
The Company
My office was rather small (only around 5 people) which meant we were a super laid back office. We were more like a group of friends hanging out to do work together rather than a strict business. Watching funny videos during the lunch break and discussing the daily news was always the highlight of my day.
Microsoft's internship program is so well organised its crazy. I never expected to be welcomed so well and have so much hope placed upon me. You can really tell that Microsoft value their interns and its nice to be part of a community instead of a lone ranger like in some other companies.
I was given one to one training with the previous intern when I started and then given one to one training with my colleague to solidify what I had already learnt. We were also allowed to take free Microsoft exams which looks great on the CV!

Extremely appealing. Microsoft offer so many opportunities and I have thoroughly enjoyed my year so I look forward to reapplying as a graduate!
The Culture
Very much so! The intern community is made up of around 100 students and you're so well integrated from day one. The social scene was amazing and the people were like minded and great to be around.
I felt like the cost of living in Reading was quite expensive but then I chose to live by myself so that was personal choice. Interns living in groups found it much cheaper.
The nightlife is fantastic in Reading.
There were so many extra activities to get involved at like helping out at events and volunteering for networking events are universities.
