The Role
Overall, it was a great experience! I have met some great people within the intern community and also the whole of Microsoft.
You are given true responsibility, and treated as a full time employee. After a great induction, you are put straight to work and have your core tasks to complete in the team (the best way to learn!)
A lot of effort is put into the internship program by many different parties in the organisation. Management work to support you along your year with an open attitude to any questions and also allowing you take opportunities outside of your day-to-day role to develop yourself. You are also given a mentor outside of your immediate team to also help you navigate the rest of the business and answer any other questions, also helping you build a development plan for the year. And we also have the University staffing team that are there throughout the year to support us and help keep the intern community together through events etc.
There is always ups and downs within the year, However they were all learning curves and never did I feel like I didn't have ANYTHING to do or the opportunity to take on more.
I started off supporting members in my team, but after a couple of months I was given my own roles to execute from the initial stages of liaising with management to understand the vacancy and what they were looking for, to carrying out interviews and also offer calls. Together with that, I worked with projects within my team where tasks were assigned crucial to execute the final result.
Extremely, It has allowed me to not only apply my knowledge from my first two years in a Business degree but also develop soft skills that will allow me to be more productive and effective in my last year at university, and also in my future graduate role! I believe this year has given me great visibility of how a large multinational works and given me some great experiences and examples to use moving forward
The Company
A very friendly and open atmosphere fills Microsoft, which I believe is a great environment to develop yourself early in your career. There is no fear to ask questions and it can be said the organisation is quite 'flat' with senior leadership feeling just as close. And you are given many opportunities to liaise with them.
I believe a lot of though has gone into this programme, and it has also been running for a while. A lot of effort is put into considering the current interns thoughts on the year and collated in a survey - to ensure there is always improvement the following year!
We are given mentors and also the opportunity to complete Microsoft Office Specialist exams free of charge as a way of development. The open atmosphere also allows you to easily learn across the business from a variety of employees.

The Culture
It was a good intern community, quite large in size! it basically felt like an extension year of uni but with the experience of working within a large organisation.
The overall internship salary covered for costs with no issue - rent is usually around 300-400pcm.
Reading has a variety of different clubs to go to, it is also close to London which meant there was a selection of places to go!
Most weekends are spent doing different activities; day trips to areas close by and London etc
