The Role
Microsoft is a great employer, and the internship year is really focused in empowering interns, giving them a great blend of responsibility, support and stretch activities outside your role. Working within the LCA department allowed me to understand how Microsoft is perceived in the society, having the opportunity to improve the company's societal brand but it also allow me to work internally project managing strategic employee engagement activities. The pay is useful and I also had few opportunities to travel, which is not very common in the employer's market
at Microsoft, everyone seems to value your opinion, and I always felt secure to share my ideas, and some of them have really made a change in the department. Your work is appreciated and you often get rewarded for your efforts.
My manager and supervisor have had a real impact on improving my overall placement year. From increasing the level of responsibility within my remit to allow me to expand my skills, to offering me constant support personally and professionally.
I have always been working on interesting project, and if you ever felt bored, there will always be an opportunity for you to get involved in external stretch project, with the other interns or within other departments.
The responsibility aspect was the best thing about Microsoft; I have been leading various teams and solely project managed few CSR projects. I really felt my work was valued and this motivated me to work with pleasure every day.
Having had the chance to apply the theories learnt in uni in real life was exceptional. It's interesting how the concepts you've read about in your courses have so much impact in your daily job, sometimes making your work easier or clearer. For example, I have used 6 Sigma in a research project that further translated in a changed process that impacts hundred of employees. It was also fantastic to see, how in real life sometimes theory won't work at all, and then your problem solving skills and brilliant team comes to help.
The Company
People in the office are always friendly or welcoming. Microsoft has great areas to wind down after a long meeting, from the lakes outside to gaming areas and the amazing two canteens.
From induction to mid year events and monthly drop ins, you were always supported within the placement, but still having the empowerment to tailor the year to your own needs.
I have develop sooo much at Microsoft. I have worked on a range of projects that allowed me to develop a good lot of skills: from events management, digital marketing, process analysis change, stakeholder management, planning and organising to improving teamwork, collaboration and leadership. I always had the team's support but also the opportunity to be mentored, shadow other employees or have short catch up coffees on any subject of my interest with the experts in the area.

The Culture
Yes, the intern community had plenty of opportunities to socialise and get to know each other.
Living in Reading is not too bad, rent was around £350 average, and socialising is affordable.
Plenty of pubs, clubs, dance places. and also you have the intern community with you and that's fun guaranteed.
There were plenty. I've got involved in stretched proejcts, one of them brought me to Amsterdam, where i had the chance to present my work to the Netherlands Microsoft GM. Awesome"
