    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My time at Microsoft has been a big learning curve for me, there has continuously been opportunities for me to grow. I have had a fantastic time learning about the IT industry and developing both new and existing skills.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The work style here, was very independent, I was often trusted to get on with my tasks, projects and responsibilities. I met with my manager once a month, to sync with him and update him on my progress.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the nature of my responsibilities I was often seen as a valid source for the resources that I managed. This meant that in addition to my project and account work, I always had a steady influx of colleagues needing advice and support. While at times this did prove extremely busy, I was happy to know that my role here at Microsoft was impactful.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was continuously given responsibility to lead, manage and drive vital projects and tasks. Having an account which contributed to the wider business revenue, was also a great opportunity.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The work ethic that I have developed while on placement has made me even more focused in my approach to tasks, projects and other responsibilities. This will prove invaluable upon my return to final year, where I will need high work ethic to balance dissertation, exams, coursework and graduate applications (as well as a social life).

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great. Very relaxed, I felt comfortable and able to approach any of my colleagues. During major events in the Microsoft calendar, there would be lots of activities going on in the communal areas - making the office fun and vibrant.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My placement as a whole was organised, however, there was also plenty of flexibility in what I could choose to get involved in - which was great!

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Microsoft are a big advocate for training and development. At the start of my scheme, I had two weeks of formal training where I was taught about all aspects of my business area. Following this there were tonnes of free opportunities to up skill throughout the year. My manager often encouraged me to seek and take advantage of all of these opportunities.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future opportunities at Microsoft are very appealing, my role is actually on offer for the grad scheme so I will definitely be applying back. I also like the idea that you are able to move sideways as well as upwards - meaning there are opportunities to explore.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there was. In my year here there were just under 120 placement students. So it was nice having others around who were in a similar situation. Social events put on by the organisation also offered an opportunity to bond with other colleagues outside of the work environment.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Rent was cheaper than what I had been paying at university, however, was expensive considering I was not living in a big city. Socialising however, was quite cheap and affordable.
