The Role
I really enjoyed my placement at HP, it was a little slow and boring to begin with but when I developed the trust of the managers and colleagues, I was given more responsibility and exposure to real life events and ones that will be of great value in the future and applicable to many roles.
I feel very valued. There is a philosophy called ONE HP where everyone works together and every employee is important to the company. It is this where you can really see that everyone in the business will help you and have time for you if you want or need it. My team ending up buying me a Christmas a birthday present which made me feel really valued.
I have been given excellent support and guidance, I have been given exposure to things my manager doesn't have to tell me but has chosen to as he wants to develop my experience and understanding. Whenever I needed help on anything my manager or another colleague was always happy to help and really enhanced my experience here.
In the early months when I was still getting used to the core roles it wasn't very busy at all at it was a process of waiting for requests. However, as the year progressed I was given more responsibility and this meant I was busier and a good level of busy. Not overworked and stressed but not bored either
I was given lots of responsibility dring my placement. For instance I was trusted to run certain projects to try and drive sales for my area. I was running a decommissioning service for one account meaning I generated some revenue for the company. Also, in the absence of my manager, he would let me conduct and call monthly and quarterly forecasts in his absence, which in turn goes to senior management.
I would say a fair amount of skills learned a re quite specific to HP and less applicable. However, the amount of company knowledge I have gained and business experience will certainly help in my final year when required to use business examples in particular. And general business knowledge of the small things day to day which are useful to know will also help. Also the further development of skills such as problem solving, presenting etc.
The Company
The atmosphere was very positive and feel good. Not deadly silent but people always around to have a chat and discuss things. With free tea, coffee etc then this made it a nice atmosphere also
It was well organized, everyone knew what was happening and understand the requirement to give us good experience and worked out really well.
I never went on any training courses etc but general training and guidance given on a regular basis all adds up and felt great knowledge and on my core roles as well
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
They are very appealing as they have a significant graduate program and have various roles that I can apply for and even change if it doesn't suit me. All very positive.
The Culture
There are about 60 placements students at the place I work so there was a great social scene with regular nights out and an intern football team to get involved with so was very good.
I lived at home but from others who rented in the reading area say it was reasonable, not cheap but not expensive either.
Was quite good, it is near Reading university so was good.
Yes there were many charity things and experiences to get involved in such as the 3 peaks challenging. Along with a football team there were plenty of activities.
