The Role
There were many ups and downs throughout the year, but overall I did enjoy my placement. I have learnt a lot, not just about working within a professional environment but also about myself. I have devleoped many skills that I will be able to use in the future.
I was valued by my organisation by being given the exact same role as any other member of staff. Although this allowed me to reach my full potential, I do feel there were several times where I was treated completely different to other permanent members of staff -due to being an intern.
Hays heavily support their trainees. You are taken on several formal training courses across the country and also heavily supported within your team / office.
There is never enough time in the day to complete everything you need to do. Being busy is good -the days go quickly and before you know it you have completed your 12 months.
After the 3 month probation I was promoted and given the same responsibilities as any other permanent member of staff. The experience is very real. If you become a full consultant you run your own mini business within the organisation.
I am grateful for the number of skills I have learnt and developed over the past 12 months. Ranging from communication, customer service, people management, training processes and leadership. All skills learnt are transitional, not just in university but they will help in the real world too.
The Company
Generally the atmosphere in the office was friendly. With higher member of staff often implementing creative ideas of how to keep the office feeling positive. The atmosphere could be described as both fun but professional / driven / serious.
The internship at Hays follows the exact same program as a trainee associate consultant - therefore you follow the same 12 week training plan and attend similar courses. The internship ran smoothly.
The personal development of employees is an area that Hays invests heavily in -as recruitment is all about people! There is a clear hierarchy of progression fullfilled with targets and promotions. The better you do the quicker you get promoted (to a certain extent) and the more training you receive.

With promotions being mainly down to you -this is appealing. However, you are not ebilgble for any type of fast track to come back after doing a placement year. You would have to do the same program over again which isn't something that I would be keen to do.
The Culture
Hays hold regional events and office events if they office has performed well. These events are fun with all travel, over night stay, 3 course meal and alcohol paid for courtest of Hays. There are competitions held also where you can win a place to an event too. Majority of employees are very social at Hays and enjoy the Friday night drinks.
I lived at home during my placement year. The area I worked in was relatively expensive - like most cities.
The nightlife in area of where my office was based was very good. Quite a professional area where people enjoy going for sit-down lunch meals and drinks / cocktails.
Not really.
