The Role
I have completely enjoyed this year. I really enjoyed not having a placement with an ‘intern culture’ where I was treated as an employee and not ‘babied’.
Being in a smaller team and being the only intern meant I had a lot of responsibility, They trusted me with my work and always appreciated everything, the placement has been a personal and academic development for me.
I had weekly, monthly and quarterly 2:1s with my manager, she was always there close by if I needed anything and would offer support and guidance when I needed it.
Day-to-day it's a busy business to work in, I was never bored- but this was a good thing! There were periods leading up to large events or projects where I would work longer hours to ensure the project/event was delivered. I enjoy being busy and having a lot to do, it's both challenging and rewarding.
As the only marketing intern I was had a lot of responsibility and the team relied on me for the payments to suppliers, the budget, owning events and various other day-to-day jobs. The fact that they relied on me and gave me responsiblity to own projects/events was extremely rewarding and boosted my confidence.
The range of skills i've gained whilst working at Gazprom Energy will assist me in my final year both academically and personally but also make me more employable in the future.
The Company
Half way through my placement I moved the a new office, the office environment is very pleasant. It's open plan with groups of teams together and very modern with breakout meeting areas and focus rooms. The open plan layout allows you to get work done but also speak to your colleagues and build internal realtionships.
It was set up well, the main advantage was that it was not too structured and I had the power to ask to work on certain projects or certain bits within marketing. I was an 'employee' compared to 'the intern'.
There was a lot of personal training within the company, i.e. learning at work week where I learnt some Dutch, also lunch time learning sessions and a range of courses to go on.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
Travel loan
Although I would jump at the opportunity to return to Gazprom Energy, the team is small and it's unlikely they will need to take anyone on.
The Culture
The social scene was great within the business, I attended various company parties, team nights or drinks with colleagues after work. I've made some great friends within the business that I plan to stay in touch with in the future.
The cost of living in Manchester isn't cheap, however there are surrounding areas like Fallowfield, Salford etc that are easy to get to and are more 'studenty'. The cost of socialising is as expensive as you want it to be, there are hundreds of bars and restaurants with different price ranges so picking to suit your cash flow is advised!
The nightlife is fantastic! There are clubs, small quirky bars and lovely cocktail bars. There is something for everyone.
Yes, lot's of small festivals, local gyms, rowing etc
