The Role
I have really enjoyed my placement year. It has opened my eyes to the sheer vastness of information available in such a massive organisation and how an organisation of this size is constantly changing. The job assigned to me has been a constant challenge (in a good way) and has pushed me to strive to better my knowledge.
The people have all been amazing. They have been very kind, helpful and supportive throughout my journey here in HP. There has not been any point where I have felt left out within my team, the morale has been in constant harmony. It has been amazing to be able to interact with people from all over the globe and working with a new culture of people (and difference in timezone) has been a new great experience for me.
I have been given support and guidance from my manager, but mainly I have been trusted by him to fulfill the task assigned to me. We spent time going through the task assigned to me and I know that I am able to ask for help at any time.
My job has been made up of very varied tasks such as; self learning on BI software, building new reports, creating documentation or training other people. Throughout the course of my project I may have hit the occasional bump in the road where certain tasks have taken longer than I have anticipated, but there has not been a time where I have felt too busy or bored.
I have been the lead on a project to integrate a new Business Intelligence software application into the region (in the initial stage) and set up automated reporting, from here I have then been trusted to roll this application out to other teams on a world wide basis.
Every part of my year here has been about learning new skills and taking into account the vastly varied environment and culture a global organisation like HP brings. The technical and personal skills I have acquired will most definitely serve me for years to come.
The Company
The environment is enjoyable, everyone works hard and when there's time for a giggle everyone joins in! It is a relaxed and trusting atmosphere. They office as whole really goes all out when it comes to raise money for charity, everyone gets involved. I've really enjoyed the experience working in this office!
Everything I needed for when I started was ready and waiting when I walked through the door! There was no waiting for login credentials etc. it was perfectly done.
The company invested a lot into me. They trusted in my ability to learn and helped me learn new job applicable skills. Some skills I learned for myself others were provided on a company wide level.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Working from home
The possibility of future in employment in HP is very promising, as long as I graduate with a 2:1 in my honors year! :) I don't know relatively where I will be in a years time, but should the opportunity present itself to come back and work for HP I can't think of a reason not to take the chance.
The Culture
There have been a couple of nights out and they were a good time.
Cost of living irrelevant as I lived at home and didn't rent. Cost of socializing average.
Nothing spectacular but a lot to choose from and always people to go out with so didn't really make a difference.
Huge variety of activities outside work - massive focus on charity events.
