About You
I enjoyed the insight event very much, there were a wide variety of activities such as job shadowing and a case study that made the event extremely interesting and enjoyable. Also, everyone was very friendly and approachable so it was easy to ask questions.
I felt valued during the event, when we were job shadowing we were split into smaller groups of 2-3 which made the activity feel more personal. The employee I shadowed also tailored his presentation to my degree (which he did not study himself) and highlighted research areas in my field that Schlumberger undertake.
Throughout the event we had a lot of guidance with regards to what we were doing that day and if we had any questions then it was easy to approach someone and ask. Also, during the case study each team was assigned someone to support us throughout the activity.
During the event we were asked to present a few times which further developed my presentation skills and will be valuable for my studies and beyond. I felt the information I received about the oil industry was the most valuable and after this event I would consider a career in upstream oil.
The Company
The event was very well structured. When we arrived at the hotel we were given a pack that included a clear itinerary of the different activities we would be undertaking over the next two days and where we would be eating out etc.
The atmosphere was great, all the employees were very friendly and the meal the night before the event meant we could get to know everyone which made the next two days even more enjoyable.
I felt like this event was really well organised and that they had put a lot of thought into the content of the day to make sure we got as much out of this experience as possible. It was great that we had a chance to take part in loads of activites like job shadowing to learn more about the company, and the case study to help develop problem solving skills.
During the event we were able to speak to a variety of employees from different areas ranging to fieldwork or tech roles, everyone was happy to talk about their experience with the company and this provided a valuable understanding of what it would be like to work in various roles within Schlumberger.
The event provided a great insight into company culture as everyone was really open to talking about their personal experiences about working in Schlumberger. It was also interesting to learn about the career options within the company itself.
The content was extremely valuable and after participating in this event and I would now consider a career in upstream oil.
Everything Else
Schlumberger paid for all travel expenses and meals were provided so there were no other expenses.
There were plenty of opportunities to network in a variety of setting. For example on the second night we went out for a meal with some managers from the company and had a chance to network then. Also throughout the day many different employees were involved in the days activities.
The networking opportunities were great, the restaurant we went to was very nice and provided a great atmosphere to connect with other attendees as well as Schlumberger employees.
One of the presentations given was by two interns who talked to us about their experiences. During this presentation they mentioned activities outside of work such as sporting events like rounders and trips to visit other Schlumberger offices.
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend, it was an invaluable experience.
