The Role
I did enjoy my placement and I learnt a great deal. Microsoft is an extremely results focused environment and I did find this overwhelming as an early in career hire. It was not always easy and I did have low points however I feel that the experience has helped to shape me as a person and will enable me to perform strongly within future roles.
It was sometimes difficult to feel valued as the organisation is so big it can be difficult to feel that your work has an impact. My colleagues were always very nice and made an effort to make me feel welcome and part of the team.
I was given support as and when I asked for it. People at Microsoft are very busy and will not hold your hand. However if you reach out to them they will always give you the time and attention that you need. The university staffing team were amazing and did and incredible job of supporting the intern community over the 12 months.
I had periods of being extremely busy and then periods of being very quiet. I would have preferred to have a more constant level of work. However I would much rather be too busy than too quiet. I did find myself at a loss sometimes as to what to do.
I was as much responsibility as I asked for and was capable of having accountability for
The Company
The general atmosphere was pleasant. The office environment never felt stressful or hostile. Everyone got along well and chatted to one another
My role had not been established prior to me arriving and I would have liked to have a clearer sense of what was expected of me initially.
The firm provided us with the opportunity to complete MOS exams for free. There were also internal training courses available and a personal development programme dedicated to pairing interns with mentors.

The graduate scheme at Microsoft is not rotational which puts me off applying as I would still like to gain experience in some different business functions
The Culture
There was a very strong sense of intern community. We all socialised every weekend and often on week nights as well. Many of the interns lived together in houses and really enjoyed this.
It was average, not overly expensive but not very cheap either.
