The Role
I could not have asked for anything more from my placement. I had the opportunity to see all parts of the practice and was given an interesting and diverse workload.
I was made to feel extremely welcome by the entire practice. My supervising partners ensured that I met as many people as possible during my time there.
The HR department were fantastic in welcoming the interns and offering assistance at any opportunity. The supervising partners also ensured that I knew what was expected of me
My two week internship contrasted greatly. During my first week, the commercial litigation department were extremely busy and as a result I had plenty to do ranging from looking over bundles to attending client meetings. In my second week in the corporate department, it was a quieter week and my work load was less, this was convenient as it allowed me to prepare for the assessment day at the end of the internship.
I was fortunate enough to be able to attend client meetings, however I was not expected to reproduce any significant work on the back of those meetings. This enabled me to enjoy the meetings and gave me the best possibility of understanding the issues at hand. I was required to draft letters to clients and was also accompanied a current trainee in delivering a court summons to an individual!
My time at Stephenson Harwood was my first insight into the funtioning of a corporate legal practice. I therefore gathered a huge amount of information that has undoubtedly assisted me in studying for the GDL this year.
The Company
Extremely welcoming and friendly
The structure to the internship was well set out and we were all aware of what was required of us.
We were given an insightful presentation on each of the departments in the practice. We were also given a talk by the Chief Executive, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] in which she outlined the core values of the firm and the future diection for SH.
Company Parties/Events
I have sinec been offered a training contract and was delighted to accept the offer
The Culture
There were plenty of social opportunities to get to know the other interns and the current trainess were more than happy to offer advice about applications and the firm.
Being situated in the City, i was expecting the cost of living to be high, however, SH offered generous remuneration during my two weeks there which alleviated any financial concerns of working in the City
A couple of events were put on by the firm. The nightlife around the office is quite good, but expensive!
I was fortunate enough to be able to play for the SH football team which play in the City Legal League. This was something that I was not expecting and gave me an opportunity to meet even more people form the practice.
