The Role
Thoroughly. It was a bit challenging at times but on the whole, it was a wonderful experience and I would absolutely do it again if I had the chance.
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues. When I first started, I feel like they invested a lot of time and patiently helped me settle into my role and the team. By time I was confident to carry out tasks, I felt a great sense of appreciation for my work.
I was given an excellent level of support right from when I first started and did not know that much about the different process till my last day. Even though I had less active supervision as the year went on, I knew I could always approach my colleagues when faced with a problem.
There were times when you were really busy and then times where there was not as much work on. Speaking to people who have been involved with project management for some time, this seems to be the way it work! Overall though, I would never say I have had too much work piled on me, but I would say the scale of the work I was being given was challenging but not too much to deal with, which is good as it allows you to learn more about the work you are doing!
I felt I was given more responsibility as the year went on but I was happy with this as it made me feel like an essential member of the team, particularly following team restructuring towards the end of the year.
The skills that I have developed and indeed acquired from scratch are truly priceless to me both as a professional and an individual. The particular team that I was working within also gave me a lot of exposure to aspects that I am confident will be beneficial to me working towards an accounting qualification.
The Company
I came in at a time where a lot of change was going on in the company, so at time the atmosphere was quite tense and edgy. But generally the people in the office were a good laugh and it was quite a relaxed atmosphere, with jokes flying around.
Time was given so that you could meet the other candidates and relax before the actual assessment centre and this made it a lot easier. Once we were offered the job we had a training week in one of the companies training facilities. This was great as it allowed you to meet the other placement studies and get a better understanding of what goes on in the company and how you will be linked into that! After this we had a meet and greet with the teams we were joining.
I feel much more confident in my programming abilities now and my general confidence in working in an office environment is definitely better
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
I found there was clearly a high level of mobility available both across teams and regions and good disclosure on new internal vacancies. The prospect of working with such motivated and friend people also lends immensely to the appeal.
The Culture
Most people who I talked with seemed to enjoy their time there. I think it all depended on the team they were put in.
I had a university friend who was doing the same internship so we buddied up and found a very affordable (for london prices) flat share within walking distance of canary warf. I personally had no financial issues living in london, especially after out first paycheck came through
Of course london nightlife is unparalleled in the UK
We had several days off with company sponsored charity work days and other activities. Also there were regular after-work drinks which were always welcome around the office.
