The Role
Overall I very much enjoyed my month at Savills. I was kept busy in the office and also enjoyed the social events that Savills organised for us. The wide range of departmental overviews were especially interesting as they helped me to figure out what direction I would like to head in as I progress in the property industry.
Very. From day one I was given responsibility and contributed work towards reports.
The support structure at Savills was excellent. We had mid-placement reviews with HR to ensure things were progressing well, but more than that the support from my graduate mentor and the rest of the department was great throughout.
I was very busy, but the work was always interesting and valuable. I would rather be busy doing something worthwhile than doing trivial tasks and going home right on time.
Straight away I was given responsibility by my team, and left to work on my own.
I think that due to my non-cognate degree the skills that I have picked up in the last month will be invaluable as I head in to a masters and beyond. That said, I still feel like I have quite a bit to learn.
The Company
Generally very good. I got on well with my team, and met various interesting people in different departments also.
I think it was overall pretty well organised. The departmental overviews were well spread out, and the work/social balance was pretty accurate. Any problems, not that I really had anything significant, were quickly sorted out.
Given that I was only here for a month there was really very little in terms of personal training or development. That said, any problems I had with understanding anything were easily dealt with by members of my team, and people were always willing to answer any questions or queries that I had.
I would love to work for Savills. I am heading in to further study, but shall be applying for the Graduate Scheme early in the next academic year, and will truly be viewing Savills as my preferred place of work.
The Culture
There was a good social atmosphere between the placement students, with everyone seeming to get along very well. The departmental overviews were a great opportunity to meet each other and discuss how everything was going. We also had a couple of events organised for us by Savills, such as the softball evening in the park, and we also me independently a few times.
Being just north of Oxford Circus pricing in the area is obviously high. I already live in the area so didn't have to fork out any further expense luckily, but I can imagine for those coming from further afield that the remuneration received is probably not enough to live and socialise around here.
Central London is obviously full of nightlife. There were three pubs within a two minute walk of the office, which was useful.
As mentioned earlier Savills did organise a few social events outside of work, but possibly more could have been organised over the course of the month.
