About You
I enjoyed it very much as it gave me useful insight into a career as a lawyer at an international commercial law firm. Being on display and assessed all the time was strenuous but that is the nature of the competition for training contracts.
I was treated well in the seats in which I sat, as other members of staff were happy to have chat about the firm and enquire about my studies. It wasn't always possible to work on headline matters but I was only a temporary worker.
I felt I was always able to talk to my trainee buddy, supervisor, or email HR if I had a question or problem. The Focus On sessions were a useful way of teaching us about the various industry groups of the firm and the sort of work done there.
The experience I gained will directly translate to future work I will be doing so I feel it was very useful.
The Company
It was structured well. Focus On sessions were a handy and concise way to introduce us to the firm's various groups, and social events, both internal and external, were timed well throughout to give us a break.
The atmosphere around the office was welcoming. There was a degree of pressure since the vacation schemers are ultimately competing for training contracts, but all the other vacation schemers were very friendly. You are expected to work hard, but everyone around was very nice.
There was a good degree of introducing us to the work and career but it was generally group activities.
The work was very similar to what it would be like as a full time role, though with a few more menial tasks.
I feel I'm very well acquainted with the firm's culture now, as they are quite keen on distinguishing themselves from other law firms through this.
I'm certain that I want to be a commercial solicitor after experience after this work.
Everything Else
The weekly pay just covered my expenses.
We were encouraged to meet other members of the firm. There were lunches, drinks, pro bono work, sports, and other social activities.
I live quite far away so not so fun for me given my long journey, but they were well organised and the trainees made sure we had a good time.
We were informed of all departmental and group activities offered to staff of the firm.
It was highly useful and enjoyable on the whole.
