About You
I thought the vacation scheme was extremely enjoyable and a great way to experience the firm's culture and ambition.
Even though I was only at the firm for 2 weeks, everyone from partners down to trainees do remember us by names and were always looking out for us. Moreover, the social events after work were always a pleasure to attend.
We had a buddy and supervisor system, which was extremely helpful. Despite being busy, they were always able to spare some time to catch-up on how my day is going or answer any questions about the work I am tasked with or general questions about the firm.
I learnt a fair bit in relation to drafting and those skills are definitely something that will assist me as I go onto my final year of law school. Moreover, I believe that having spoken to the trainees, associates and partners, you can really get a feel if the firm is the right firm for you.
The Company
We had Focus session most mornings which allowed us to be introduced to the different practice areas within the firm. They were snappy and to the point, so I did not feel like it was a drag. Beyond that, I was given varied work, which allowed me to learn more about the work the firm did. We had two formal socials as well as other ad-hoc socials planned either by practice area or among the vacation scheme students ourselves.
The best way to sum it up would be - work hard, play hard.
It was a mere two weeks but I thought that Taylor Wessing really did what they could to help us to get settled and handle the various tasks we were given.
It was what I expected in some sense - some days you get to leave on time and on others where there might be pressing matters, it just means leaving the office slightly later. Crucially, the experience I had over the 2 weeks really showed me what working full time at Taylor Wessing would be like.
The firm's culture was extremely evident, and it was not some rules everyone had to abide by, rather it was something that is inherent. Each practice area might have a slight variation in terms of culture - some chattier than others, but it was generally similar.
It was definitely informative in reaffirming my decision to be a solicitor.
Everything Else
I would say the pay is competitive.
There were loads of opportunities for networking and meeting people in the firm. We had welcome drinks, social events etc. Moreover, everyone in the firm are friendly and always willing to have a chat.
They were great opportunities for the vacation scheme students to get to know each other better and were definitely useful should you feel intimidated to chat with a partner during office hours (though you should not feel that way because everyone was really nice).
There are various sporting nights throughout the week and also pro-bono opportunities on Wednesdays.
I have loved my experience with Taylor Wessing and definitely recommend it to anyone, especially if you are on the fence as to whether Taylor Wessing is the right firm for you.
