The Role
I really enjoyed my placement- got to see a lot of different areas of the company and we were also invited to many senior speaker talks to learn more about the company. My team were very welcoming and the culture of the company was a great one to work in.
I genuinely feel that I had a lot of input in terms of my day to day job, particularly with regards to the project work I undertook for around four weeks. My supervisor sat down with me every week to discuss my progress and took time out of his day every day to ensure that I was shadowing the best people whenever I could.
My supervisor was absolutely fantastic, a pleasure to work for and very fair. Not once did my supervisor treat me like a slave compared to the supervisors some of my friends have had at other banks and the meal he took me for on the last day was a great touch which I was extremely grateful for.
Every day I always had something to do and as an intern, I did not expect to be in a position whereby I would have to prioritise my workload. If I didn't have anything to do, my manager put me in contact with somebody who did.
During my placement I had a lot of responsibility particularly in terms of a project I carried out which would determine the security of secure locations within the bank. The client on boarding process was particularly interesting but also very important as any minor errors could lead to clients not being on boarded on time, costing money.
The skills I developed (time management, computer skills etc) will help me greatly in any future career. I also gained a deeper understanding of the investment bank which will help me in my career.
The Company
The atmosphere was actually a lot friendlier than I expected- everyone was very welcoming and more than happy to help me. Employees were also friendly amongst each other and it was a fun but hard-working environment.
It was very well organised- we had a senior speaker series where we heard from senior management each week, several networking events, a csr day, a mid and end internship party and a mentor, buddy, exec rep and manager (all of which gave support).
They invested relatively heavily in us. A lot of time, from various employees , was invested in showing us techniques or how to do things, as well as offering support or talking to us about different areas of the company.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
Very appealing. There is a good salary, with reasonable days holiday as well as a good pension scheme and many other benefits.
The Culture
There was a good social scene amongst the other interns- we regularly went out on a friday and things were also organised at weekends. Spent lunch with them everyday and occasionally drinks after work.
Relatively expensive as it was in London. Drinks are expensive but nights out weren't that expensive if you knew right places to go.
The nightlife in the area we worked was good, no clubs in Canary Wharf though but good areas nearby
Yes there were some clubs to get involve with. You can also participate in the charity events.
