The Role
Really enjoyed the actual work involved and the experience of working life. I also got on well with everyone in the office.
From as soon as my first day everyone in my team took time out of their day to delegate appropriate work to me or just to chat/get to know me! On the social side, I was always invited to any social events outside of work.
I was given as much support and guidance as I needed; my buddy and those sat around me were always happy to answer any questions I had (even the silly ones!). As time went on I was trusted with more difficult tasks and no one ever begrudged having to explain things slowly to me!
For the majority of my internship I wasn't very busy and kept asking around the office for people to give me more work. However, it gave me a lot of time to work on my intern project/presentation which was useful. Also, towards the end of my internship I had lots of work lined up!
From day one you are given proper work that actually matters and is sent out to clients. But Mercer has a very well-established peer review system so every piece of work you do is checked by at least two people meaning any mistake you make will definitely be corrected before being sent out! I also had direct telephone contact with clients on several occasions.
Great experience of office work and the role of an actuary.
The Company
It was a very friendly and welcoming office; there was always a quiet murmur of conversation and the occasional joke email!
Very well-established internship. Trips to london at the beginning and end of the internship were very well organised.
Correct balance between training and learning on-the-job. Colleagues were happy to spend time explaining things to me!
National Travel
I was offered the job during the last week of my internship and didn't think twice about accepting it!
The Culture
Frequent trips to the pub after work and a pub lunch most fridays! As interns we organised a charity pub quiz that a lot of people attended.
I lived with my parents and commuted to the office so that was cheap! Socializing was standard prices for the area.
