The Role
I have enjoyed every second at 3M. It is truly one of the best companies to work for, you are given a huge amount of responsibility (I managed a product portfolio, managed social media and also had my own budget), you are offered development programmes across the year such as emerging talent and also at department level such as CRM and Excel. They are also brilliant at reward and recognition using a star award scheme where you can be given vouchers from £25 and upwards for your achievements.
3M's culture is based around team work, collaboration and innovation so as soon as you walk in you are a valued member of the team. They spend an awful lot of money to develop as they value you as a worker not as a student ( I have never made a cup of tea, done filing or admin). They will push you and make you work hard as they want to get the most out of you and for you to learn. I had been at 3M a month and I was given a new product to launch, I don't know many people who can say they have launched a successful product into the market at 21.
You are given weekly catch ups with your manager until you find your feet and then move to a monthly 1 to 1. In this hour they work on your priorites, provide feedback and also look at your development plan so they can offer you support in key improvement areas. You are also given a mentor from outside the business who is able to help you network outside the business you work in. They make sure you have a team around you who look to guide you and also support you throughout your year
I always had enough to do on a daily basis and if I didn't they were always quick to find a new project to work on or for me to support someone else. If you want a job where you sit around doing nothing then 3M is not for you but if you want to get stuck in and get a varied work experience then it is the perfect place to go.
As I said earlier, I managed my own portfolio of products, managed my own spend and budget, managed social media and also led a product launch and an A3 which is a key objective for the business. They really value your contribution and will always find you something meaningful to work on.
In terms of my degree it identified the areas which I am most interested in and made picking my final year options a lot easier. It has also created loads of real life examples that I can use in my work in the future. In terms of the future, I have a focused career plan which was developed through talking to my managers and career coach which has allowed me to go into my final year with a greater focus on what I need to work on when I leave.
The Company
Always friendly, very welcoming. Everyone will always say Hi to you in the office. Oh and there is also some form of sweet food around...
They have an established emerging talent programme that you complete across the year so everything is very focused and organised. Your managers are also very experienced many have had an IP before so your always in good hands.
I have completed many training schemes this year; productivity ninja, shoutlet training, product training, CRM training. All of which are a cost to the company but they see you as an investment and therefore they will offer you as much training as you want and need!.

Grad scheme is more ad-hoc than the placement scheme, but they make every effort to keep in contact when you leave and you are the most likely to come back if you have completed a placement year with them.
The Culture
Yes we took part in many socials across the year as IP's and also in my team. They have Christmas parties, national sales meetings, sports days etc so there is always time to go out and have some fun!
Loughborough is a student town so everything is relatively cheap and student focused
Again as Loughborough is a University town, there are loads of clubs, student union etc and when it's term time everything is busy!
There are local teams in the area, I play hockey for two local teams who I found out about at work!
