The Role
I was given the opportunity to get involved with fee earning work in the Real Estate department and the Finance department. I attended numerous social events including a client cricket match.
You have to remember that which ever law firm you go to for work experience, you are likely to be there for a few weeks only and have little to no legal experience. I felt as valued as possible for a vacation scheme student given the context. More importantly, I was made to feel like part of the firm socially which is an important factor given that a vacation scheme student's contribution to work is likely to be limited given their lack of experience.
There was little guidance by management in our day-to-day role - and was not expected. This was provided for us by our respective supervisors. We were, however, given talks by a number of the managing partners including the CEO.
Almost perfect. My first week I was given plenty to do to help out in terms fee-earning work. My second week was much quieter as my supervisor allowed me time to prepare for the assessment centre.
Bit of an unfair question. How much responsibility can you give someone who is not fully qualified in the legal profession and is only there for a 2 week period?
Nothing I learnt during the two weeks helped my studies or my future career. However, I did meet a number of people who I have got to know better since I have started full time work with the firm and more importantly, who remembered me!
The Company
Good, although, given that the vacation scheme I attended was during the summer months, there were a number of absences with people on holiday, so there was perhaps less of a buzz than usual.
Very well organised. Seminars, lunches, dinners, drinks, work and a tour of Lloyd's of London insurance market.
For a vacation scheme student a lot. The only reason you are there is because the firm sees you as a potential future employee and trainee. It is an important part of the selection process so they want to see that you are the sort of person that will fit into the firm.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
I got a job with them.
The Culture
Once the assessment centre was over with, yes. People started to relax a lot more.
Very high, its in the City. I was fortunate enough to live with my brother whilst I was undertaing my vacation scheme, which was rent free. This is a ridiculous question. Who in their right mind is going to choose where they work based on the cost of socialising? The rewards of getting a job at an international law firm far outweight how much a pint costs.
It's the City!? Go to the West End or Shoreditch if you want a really good night out. only 10-20 mins away.
I attended plenty of drinks functions and was asked to play in a client cricket match.
