The Role
It was a learning experience that I will cherish and I was given opportunities I did not expect and made some for myself.
In the end you are an intern and cannot expect your opinion to be held in high light, that being said I definitely did feel a sense of value working with the team as I felt I brought a fresh new perspective and optimism about my role.
Even when extremely busy I never felt as I was being excluded and not given attention. I thrive new opportunities and am okay spending time trying to work things out for myself. I would say working in finance (and how busy it is) it is very difficult to have a manager that will always have time for you and perhaps the role is not suited to someone that requires to work in that way.
It varies, there will be days when I am completely swamped and times when it is relaxed. I felt my workload on average was more than other interns across the board.
Once the trust was built up (with took a few months) I felt that I was given the ability to make decisions independently and was left to complete projects myself and creating new contacts without having to ask for constant permission.
In short without this placement I feel I would have not been ready at all when it comes to graduate jobs. It is surprising how important the simple things like adapting to the office culture and telephone and email manner were absent in my skill set.
The Company
As an intern coming from university it is completely different, I would have liked to have more people around my age range as most employees were well established and therefore will have a different mind set to everyday life.
As we were the first ever intern intake it was definitely very choppy and felt like a last minute decision however after a few months I felt my role was one which was more of a full time employee role which I enjoyed.
As a contractor external training was not offered to myself. However training was offered internally and I got to understand other employees in my teams role in detail as a result of this.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Interns are encouraged to continue and previous experience in the company opens up opportunities with Siemens worldwide with a significant advantage. My manager was happy to provide a reference for me when applying for these roles.
The Culture
Since I go to the same university I already knew a few of them and got to know a lot of the graduates too and have met with them several times outside work. I can imagine it being more difficult for people not in the university but now the opportunity is being opened across the country next year this should result in interns and graduates trying harder to keep in contact as it is a new town for them.
Coming from a town near London, Lincoln is DANGEROUSLY cheap.
Not the best, not the worst there is enough clubs and bars for a good night out without getting bored.
Email trails are always circulating between interns and graduates with social and sporting events. If you want to get involved there is always something going on.
