The Role
I absolutely loved my work placement with Aldi. I found that everyone I worked with was extremely helpful and incredibly supportive. Looking back over the year, I can safely say it is one of the best things I've done and I feel a much better person for it overall.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. My store and work colleagues respected by position in store. Being a young adult and managing other people who have been there/a lot older than me was a daunting task but everyone respected my position in store.
I was given guidance and support by my peers on a daily basis. All work colleagues were very much approchable when I needed guidance on a particular situation. Working for the store manager resulted in daily commmunication and feedback based on how you performed.
The placement is very busy, but it is a thrill. There isn't a day were you are sat watching the clock thats for sure. Each day is different and brings about new situations. There were never any days were I felt I had done little/no work, each day was a productive one.
I don't think there is a placement other than Aldi that gives you an abundance of responsibility. From my time in store, I was running the shift after only a few weeks, holding the safe key and carrying out store orders. The amount of responsibility and trust given out is huge but is very rewarding
I think it will assist me greatly in my final year of my degree. I feel I can use many situations I have experienced this year and relate them to assignments which I will have to complete. I feel I will be alot more productive when planning/completing assignments and this will allow me to structure my time more efficiently.
The Company
The atmosphere was a lot more relaxed and laid back at head office compared to our time in store. Coming from a high pace environment to a relatively more relaxed atmosphere was different but it was nice to work in.
It was very run. From day one we adhered to the training plan that was set for the whole year.
A huge amount of time was invested. Training included all store assistant training, store management training over a 6 month period.
Company Parties/Events
Future employment prospects are based on your performance on the placement. Work hard each day to make future employment prospects greater!
The Culture
This year we socialised regularly amongst each other especially with weekends off at head office. It was different however when we were in store as each one of us was working different hours, but we did try and meet up once every month to share our experiences of the placement.
The cost of living was relatively cheap in the Manchester region. Rent and food were all of the standard prices.
There is always something on in Manchester each night, however with the busy working schedule I didn't get into the city centre that often.
There were many opportunities to get involved in outside of work, such as going to the gym, playing football and doing plenty of shopping.
