The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at GSK spent in the HR department. It was an extremely valuable experience in which I learnt a variety of new skills that I can apply to my final year at university and the world of work post graduation. Overall it’s been a great year, a lot of fun and I’ve made a few close friends who I hope to keep in contact with
My role meant I was able to connect with people across the business, particularly overseas in the US and Asia Pacific. I was able to have close relationships with my colleagues and therefore felt valued by them as a member of the team
My manager and I worked closely together during my placement year and I was provided with a lot of support and guidance. I was encouraged to attend both online training and practical development sessions in order to improve my confidence and perform well within my role
I had a comfortable work load throughout the year handling different projects such as recruitment, social media, comms and development as well as attending meetings with colleagues and organising events. My workload has allowed be to become more flexible, adaptable to change and highly organised in terms of prioritising my work
I was given more responsibility as my time went on at GSK. You can become as little or as much involved in projects as you wish and therefore your level of responsibility can vary
Skills such as organisation, time management, being both flexible and adaptable will definitely help me with my final year at university however the more practical experience I have gained at GSK will be hugely beneficial post graduation in future jobs
The Company
The atmosphere is very warm and welcoming and employees are encouraged to change seats within the office to meet/connect with new people
GSK is a highly valued organisation and its placement programme reflects this as the year was well structured and organised
GSK invested heavily in my development as I attended a variety of online led courses as well as formal instructor led courses on resilience etc. I was also given a coach to help with any concerns/issues I was having within my role. There is a wide variety of developmental training available to GSK employees
Flexi Time
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Very appealing. I would jump at the chance to return to GSK as I have had a great year
The Culture
Yes the placement community is very strong and organises regular social events outside of work. I have made some great friends during my time at GSK and hope to stay in touch with them
I lived outside of London so can't comment on the living costs however the socialising costs seem to be fairly reasonable around Brentford
Brentford is a fairly quiet place and there isn't much nightlife however London is a quick train journey away and the social life there is great!
Apart from social events through the placement network, I wasn't aware of any activities that I could get involved in
