The Role
My placement year with GSK was absolutely brilliant. I could not have asked for a better company to work for and I always felt like my opinion was continually valued as well as a great amount of responsibility always being bestowed upon me for me to make my best judgement with on upcoming tasks. Everyone at the company was so supportive of me during my year and the fact you are only there for a year and a placement student did not at all affect how people treated you.
During my placement I was a key member of the team and therefore I was working on the majority of the tasks under my service. I was always appreciated and also given the responsibility in order to make new decisions on how the service should progress. I really felt like I was playing a big part in the success of my service that I worked under and I felt the environment was brilliant to work in.
I could not have asked for a better manager whilst at GlaxoSmithKline and I genuinely feel that he made my placement. He was continually supportive of me, exceedingly flexible when he needed to be and always ensured I got the best experience that I possibly could have whilst I was there based on the responsibilities I was given. I am sad that I will be leaving and will definitely stay in contact with my manager after I leave.
Our service was very dynamic and therefore you're never doing the same task every day. It also meant that there was constantly work to do, however you could put as much work on your shoulders as you felt comfortable with. Due to wanting to get the best experience from my year, I always opted in to working on extra tasks that I didn't always necessarily have to; I never felt I was twiddling my thumbs or that I did not have anything to do.
Due to the team managing my service only being made up of a small amount of people, 3 including myself, I was very much a core member of the team working on the majority of tasks. I very much valued this opportunity and could not have asked for a better team/service to work under as I have heard from other placement students were they were working on minor tasks that did not affect the major process. I can safely say this was not the case for me.
All of the things that I worked on during my placement were of a very techy nature and were incredible things for me to learn and be able to take to the future. I have benefitted very much from this added technical knowledge but I can also take away my organisational skills as well as the fact that I now know how a corporate business runs through tasks on a daily basis.
