About You
It was mostly enjoyable with social events organised for all of the intake. The gravitation of the events to the centre of Birmingham was somewhat annoying however.
I mostly felt like I was contributing at a good level to the company however on my second client I experienced a lot of down time during which I was not productive and felt that the team could have been more proactive in offering me work to do.
Both of the teams I worked with were supportive and talked me through the work I was doing and why it needed to be done as well as helping with any problems or issues I had. I did not feel that this was anything of an issue as many of the first and second year graduates with whom I was working were also regularly asking questions to their seniors.
The applied understanding of accounting concepts should help in relevant modules for my degree. The team working skills should also serve well as well as increasing the examples I will be able to use in future interviews.
The Company
The initial few days of the programme were well structured with introductory talks held at a hotel from members of Deloitte staff and training in the office. The communication of work placements was also done reasonably efficiently however some chasing was required.
The general atmosphere was good and exactly how I imagine it would be if was to take a graduate job with the firm. Whilst this means there was limited "special treatment" of their interns it also means that I have a more accurate picture of what the job would be like.
There was some brief training on the use of firm specific software however most of it was on the job. Team members with whom I was working were always willing to help with whatever I had been assigned so in that respect it was quite good.
There was little special treatment of interns with us being assigned straight to teams working on clients allowing to get a very realistic picture of what the role would entail. We were allowed to leave at around 1730 rather than staying with the rest of the team members, however, they did not try to hide the fact that they worked long hours.
The company culture seemed to vary greatly depending on the team with which I worked with some being more driven and work orientated whilst other teams on different clients were more sociable.
I think the insight would demonstrate to anyone who took the opportunity what the career itself would entail allowing them to make a balanced decision with much clarity about what they were or were not about to choose.
Everything Else
The overall pay was good and higher than at least one of their competitors by a noticeable amount. Travel to client site was also reimbursed provided the journey did not form part of your journey to your normal place of work i.e. the office. As I was able to drive the company reimburses mileage at a rate much higher than the cost of fuel although this will be standard across most firms as it is a government set rate.
Yes after the first three days I was assigned to different jobs allowing me to meet a range of people from the firm at different levels. The people were more than willing to answer questions I had about the graduate scheme and beyond. I was also put in a client facing role allowing me to meet people from outside of the firm as well.
The initial induction took place in a hotel with evening meal, breakfast and lunch provided allowing us to get to know the other interns and a few current employees. There were then two further socials, a lunch on the first day at the office and dinner in the final week where we met our assigned buddies and could catch up with the other interns to compare our experiences.
Yes I was offered to joined the firm's cricket team during my time at the firm as well as hearing about the football team and netball teams.
If they were interested in the field and industry then yes.
