About You
I really enjoyed my vacation scheme at Allen and Overy. The opportunity to sit in two different departments helped in gaining an insight into how the firm works. Additionally, the social events were not only fun, but also encouraged engagement with other students, trainees, associates and partners.
I felt extremely valued because I was given tasks relating to the deal my trainer was working on and my comments and research were always taken into consideration.
A&O provided guidance in all areas of the firm. We had full support in our work from the PAs, the PSLs, the Library and the IT staff. In addition, we were allotted trainee buddies on the basis of our backgrounds which made it easier to connect with them and feel comfortable.
The Insight was a good way to learn about the practicalities of the life in a commercial law firm and the actual work you would be expected to do in your day-to-day life.
The Company
The insight was very well structured as we had the opportunity to experience a vast multitude of activities. Not only did we get to know the work involved, but also the people there, the culture and working environment and the support services available for our guidance.
There was consensus among the students that the insight was a fun and learning experience.
The company took special efforts to meet the needs of all students. From my personal experience, I can confidently say that they invest a lot in each student. For example, they arranged a personal session for me with the HR manager to answer questions about qualifications and the Training Contract (after a general session had already been undertaken).
Sitting in different practice areas as well as hearing talks from partners about the work such areas do was extremely helpful.
The insight promoted interaction with a large group of people and this helped in understanding the culture of the company as well as the work ethic.
It gives you an idea of the kind of work you would be expected to do in your future career. After the insight, I was convinced that I enjoyed such work and wanted to be a city lawyer.
Everything Else
I was paid a weekly stipend and also reimbursed ticket and accommodation expenses.
There were numerous networking opportunities to meet other employees such as partners, associates, trainees etc.
There were numerous social events for networking. We had a dinner with a number of partners of the firm and a networking lunch to meet with associates from all the practice areas. In addition, the client pitch exercise helped us connect with a range of people, from partners to BD managers to research assistants.
Yes. We were also involved in one of the pro bono activities of the firm during our time there.
I would definitely recommend this insight as it is a great way to learn about the culture of a city firm and have a fun experience.
