The Role
I have enjoyed it, definitely enjoyed it more than what I thought I would going in. It's nice to get a much more detailed view of how forensics in belfast is ran, the kinds of projects worked on and how they are completed,
I did, and what helped was being treated like an employee for example I was invited to all the events the department did over the summer; from BBQs to team building events. Aside from this, I was also included in various meetings and projects.
From the beginning I was assigned a 'buddy' and 'people manager' and always felt that I could approach them with problems. After a while of settling in, seeing the different departments and projects I felt comfortable approaching and asking anyone within forensics for help/guidance.
Some days were busier than others, I went into this placement with little technical knowledge and so the first few weeks were spent learning as much as possible (SQL, various programs etc.). Some of the work can be rather tedious but it's easy (and was explained to me) to see why it's being done and for what purpose.
After the first few weeks I was given quite a bit of responsibility by being involved in various projects within forensics and outside it.
I don't think the skills will help specifically with my degree, but it has given me an idea of what kinds of skills companies are looking for to get into this line of work and something I hope to continue working on before applying for graduate roles.
The Company
I liked the general atmosphere, everyone was really friendly and approachable.
Fairly well. There was a two day induction in England with lots of other interns from the the different offices and departments, this was ran really well and was a nice introduction to the company. Within Belfast itself it was mosly well organised, there were various training classes and after those I was moved to the section within FTS in which i wanted to work.
Quite a bit, the first two(ish) weeks were spent in several different training classes, shadowing staff and bits of self study ( with help) for the various programs we used throughout FTS and SQL.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Good, I will very likely apply for a graduate scheme sometime in the near future
The Culture
Yes, there were also many events within FTS.
Belfast is probably is reasonably priced
The office is only around a 5 min walk from the city centre
Yes, in the summer there are a few BBQ and team building activities.
