The Role
I enjoyed many aspects of my internship. The work was challenging enough to give us an insight into the client work PwC does but not too difficult that it put us off. The Glasgow office was very social and made every attempt to make us feel welcome by putting on a Wimbledon afternoon and coffee morning.
The majority of staff I worked with were very approachable, friendly and good at coaching us. Obviously a lot of them were very busy and so sometimes appeared a little too stressed to help out.
The support I got at PwC from my People Manager, Buddy and trainers was fantastic. Every single one was ideally fitted for the job because they were so understanding and approachable. Can't rate them highly enough.
On a daily basis I was given just the right amount of work to get on with. I managed to complete my training courses, intern project work and other admin tasks in my spare time, whenever I had it!
I was never "running the show" (that would have been awful!) but I was given just the right amount of responsibility. On a few occasions I was asked to contact the client by phone and email which, for an intern, was quite exciting! It made me feel like I was really part of the team.
The skills I've learned here will be invaluable for my final year at university. Now that I know how a financial services firm conducts an audit, I can imagine how the theories I'm learning in university would apply to a work situation.
The Company
The Glasgow office was very social and friendly - everyone introduces themselves to you and asks how you're getting on!
The internship was very well organised - we all knew what we had to do at each stage in the process and if we didn't, there was always someone who could help out.
The firm invested a lot in us! Our training was a three-day event down in Birmingham - flights and hotel all fully paid for us. We also have our portable laptops for us to do our work on which can't have been cheap! In terms of time as well, several members of staff took the time out their busy days to coach us on auditing.
Company Parties/Events
The majority of interns, if their feedback is good, can expect to receive the offer of a grad job.
The Culture
My intern group in Glasgow became very close over the 6 weeks. We bonded instantly at the airport on the way to our training and went out once a week for dinner during our internship!
Glasgow is cheap, in comparison to other places, to live and socialise in. The West End is slightly more expensive but offers plenty of places to socialise whereas the East End offers a lot of cheap places to stay but fewer social spots. The city centre is pricey to stay in but has the best range of socialising options, thankfully the subway connects everywhere else to the city centre.
The nightlife in Glasgow is great - so many options to go out to and plenty of chippies to get a late-night munch.
Our office organised a game of touch rugby during our time and weekly five-a-sides on a Monday night. We also had a Wimbledon drinks evening.
