The Role
Being the first real work experience in a big corporation I enjoyed the placement year to the extent that I learnt a lot for the company and for the investment banking in general. I would say it was a good way of starting a career and developing key skills.
My colleagues were great and always there to help. I was often getting feedback which was highly positive, which made me feel valued.
I was split 50:50 between two teams and I had two line managers. One of them was great and was always there to help.
There were days when I would be very busy and days when I wouldn't be. It all depended on the season really as it was a client driven job
I was given a lot of responsibilities. I was doing everything that any normal credit officer would be doing on a daily basis.
To a great extent. I developed key transferrable skills such as teamwork and communication and also the knowledge acquired on financial products greatly helped me in my final year as I was studying Derivatives.
The Company
It wasn't as fancy as anyone would imagine for an investment bank. There were many internal issues as the company was going through restructuring. However, my teams were really great and friendly so the atmosphere among us was good.
I wouldn't say there was a particular structure.... It more felt like I was a permanent employee and not a placement student.
There was the UBS Business University which anyone who signed up could attend but the overall investment was not that great.
Company Parties/Events
As I was in the Investment Bank there were some prospects. However, I withdrew my application for a graduate position because I wasn't satisfied with the overall HR organization of the whole thing...
The Culture
It was okay.
The office is in Liverpool Street so there were lots of places to eat that were not that expensive. However, commuting sometimes can be difficult and since it's London it was expensive.
Shoreditch was close by so there was some Nightlife.
Not that I now of. There was a Christmas charity fundraising for ELBA in which all placement students were involved.
