The Role
It was a really good year. I enjoyed the content of my work and it was all new to me which is great as I was able to gain new knowledge on engineering as a whole and also to learn about myself.
I would say I was relatively highly valued. I was given some high calibre tasks and (obviously) some menial tasks. They were all really great people to work with.
I had consistent guidance from my supervisor. We worked on similar projects and therefore were in constant communication. We had a good relationship! We had bi-weekly meetings to catch up and see if there was anywhere help was needed or similar...
Initially, it ranged from very busy to not so busy. Over the course of the year, workload became more constant. But there is a fair amount of autonomy at 3M & therefore you can always find something to do that'll help you in your year, be it research or networking.
As said before, I was given some high calibre tasks and some menial ones too. My team and supervisor, over the year, trusted me with more and more responsibility.
My role was not directly related to my course... however, I have learnt loads on Product Development and I have a better idea on how large companies work and manage and also, on how industry works. I also have a better idea on what I want to do
The Company
Theres a great work/play balance. Everybody is friendly and up for a good laugh... but there was always a time for work and colleagues respected that.
The scheme had been running for quite a few years at 3M & it was clear that they knew what they were doing. There were a few get togethers with the students from around the country. I believe the scheme was well organised.
3M does prize personal development highly and it was shown in the availability of courses and development programmes at my disposal. The company pays for these courses and are free to all employees. I was always given constructive criticism and able to see where to personally develop myself.

There is a good chance of me securing a job here. I do, however, still have 2 years of study, so I am free to take any route in life. There a many roles available in the country that I could apply for & having completed a placement, I believe I have an edge to the grad scheme
The Culture
I was the only placement student in my site & the other colleagues were all considerably older with families of their own, so that opportunity wasn't all that great.
The north is very cheap.
Not my thing
Some sports and social gatherings.
