About You
Not only did my time at Deloitte give me the valuable experience in a corporate office setting, but I had the opportunity to get involved with a range of work too. I really enjoyed exploring the sub-sectors within the department I was in, and it was really interesting meeting the range of people who worked there too.
Because of my low technical knowledge, there was a limited variety of work I could be involved in. However, everyone was very welcoming and patient to explain the work that they are doing for clients and even helped me to get involved. The work delegated to me was interesting, and made me feel like I was helping to make a difference.
Everyone on the SVS was allocated a buddy, who was our first point of contact whenever we need to seek guidance. Other managers there also helped us settle in and was very patient when explaining tasks or giving advice. There was always someone there to give support when needed.
The experience definitely help me to develop a good background knowledge in corporate tax, and I believe it has helped to cement my decision to pursue such a career after I finish my degree. However, the skills that I developed through working in a corporate office setting in these past few weeks I'm sure will stay with me regardless of what career path I chose.
The Company
Although communication was slightly lacking before starting the SVS, once I was there we were comprehensively informed on what we need to do, and what was expected of us.
It was a very stimulating few weeks, and I found the work to be varied and interesting. Everyone at Deloitte was very welcoming and friendly, which helped me settled in quickly and gave me the confidence to work well on tasks delegated to me.
There was an induction event aimed to help us develop interview skills, which is useful for whichever future career path. The training also gave me a better insight into what working at Deloitte was like. In terms of personal training, the work that I was involved with over the few weeks gave me practical experience in corporate tax compliance work, as well as general skills which are essential for any type of work within a corporate office setting.
The induction event at the beginning of placement was very effective in portraying the company culture, whilst working in the regional office during the scheme gave me first-hand experience in what working at the firm would be like. The work we were delegated was said to be similar to the work given to First Year Associates, and as such I believe the entire experience has given me a true picture of what working for the company would be like.
The induction event gave an outline of company culture, however what gave me the best understanding was through speaking with employees of the firm during the scheme. It was very interesting to hear of their experience in the company, especially comparing the accounts of those who had been there only a few years to those who have been at the company for decades.
The experience really showed me what working in Corporate Tax in Deloitte would be like; as my experience was so positive, it has really given me the confidence and surety to further pursue a career in Corporate Tax, and especially in Deloitte.
Everything Else
Travel expenses to training events were reimbursed in full.
The induction event at the beginning of the scheme gave us an opportunity to network with employees from another regional office in Deloitte, as well as other students on this scheme.
There were plenty of socials during the three weeks on the SVS - for example, tax socials that occur regularly at the office, as well as specific SVS Socials. It was a great opportunity to get to know employees at the firm better in a social setting.
Deloitte has a strong CSR culture, and there are employees currently involved in community work as well as sponsored events for charity, Through talking to employees, it was easy to see that there is a range of activities available for employees outside of work.
Definitely! Especially if they are considering a career in financial advisory, it's a wonderful opportunity to gain some practical experience and be able to gain further insight into the industry too. It's also a great chance to network and could give you a good understanding of working in a corporate office setting!
