    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • It was very difficult to understand what was going on because I haven't done any law before and I had to understand as much as possible of what was going on in the meetings that I went to. I also wasn't given that much work to do - merely reading and listening - however I fail to see how my. However, I enjoyed doing a presentation and I won it and I loved meeting other, very focussed, people! It was also very useful to see what being a partner in the litigation practice area was like and seeing how difficult it is and what complex challenges one has to understand and advise on as well as how many cases one has to deal with!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • They treated me very well. Had fudges, someone gave up his desk for me, was given copies of all the cases to read and try to understand and sometimes they did explain some things to me. I didn't understand a lot and wasn't given many particular jobs which I could do so I didn't feel completely integrated but they were generally very friendly!

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Some. They did try to explain what they could when they had the time but usually they were too busy to do so. They did explain some things so the rating isn't lower but they weren't able to give me full support. Indeed, there wasn't much to give me guidance/support on because they didn't give me anything to do! They pointed me towards some books but didn't get them for me (I can't locate them obviously not knowing how to) and didn't say where in the books was the information they wanted me to read.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It showed me what the job was like and I did some more underlining and trying to find what's important in what I was reading and annotating what I heard and understood but because I wasn't given much work I didn't learn masses. I probably did get much better at listening carefully to clients and got some experience working as a team for a presentation and got better at speaking without much notes (which helped to build my confidence too). So I did learn a fair amount but it could've been much better if they found a way to give me some work as some of the other people doing work experience had. But I recognise that they're very busy anyway and I think they did what they could!

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Extremely well structured. I was supplied with a full timetable with room names and times of every event we had to go to with indication on if it was optional or not. I knew when the day started and ended (although there was a little flexibility around this) and the HR team (who ran the 'events') were very helpful and friendly. I learnt about the firm's other schemes and there was an optional session on CV editing (which I didn't attend) and these were later in the week to give us a chance with our supervisors. The introductory session wasn't too long and was very informative. Excellent structure.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • I enjoyed working with my colleagues on our presentation and I thought it was interesting to hear about different cases and listen in on meetings and read particulars of claim etc... but it was rather dull. It showed me that I don't want to get into corporate, civil law but I do want to try criminal law relating to civil rights if I can. It was just that the subjects I was dealing with weren't massively interesting and were very complicated!

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Not much. However some training was implicit in having to do public speaking for a presentation and organising this and working with my team to produce the presentation. I also did a little bit of office organisation and certainly a lot of listening to clients!

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I learnt exactly what it was like to have a full time role in the area which I was working in. It consists of a lot of meetings with clients, emails to clients and generally advising clients on how to act and also acting on their behalf. It's very involved!

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I understood that TaylorWessing is very client-focused and very professional in how it acts at work but that the firm also organises firm-wide social events and they play hard as well.

    5/5

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • It wasn't always fascinating for me and it showed me that maybe it would be better if I went down a slightly different route. However I learned that I probably would be interested in a law-based career once I had some law education and understand better what I'm doing. I know now that I don't want to do anything between companies but would rather represent individuals - maybe in civil rights cases!

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • This didn't matter massively. It only costed £20 to travel to the office for the week and I had cheap packed lunches. They provided lunches on two days and they were very pleasant! It may be good if the firm had some sort of funding scheme for poorer people want to do the work experience, but for me the lack of reimbursement wasn't an issue at all.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • I was able to network with other employees in my practice area a lot but I also met with trainees from different practice areas at the Networking Lunch. However, I wasn't able to properly network or work with employees in other practice areas so I know very little about what it's like to work in those areas as a result. Maybe it would be better if there was a day where one was able go to different practice areas maybe for an hour each just to have a vague idea of what they're like.

    3/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • There was a Networking Lunch and some time to talk to other people doing work experience but actual social events were completely reliant on the department one was working with. My practice area was very, very busy so this was little - but elsewhere it was better. There are firm-wide social events but none occurred, that I know of, during the week I was at the firm.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • I was told they do some activities outside of work but have very little idea of what these were. I know they do firm-wide drinks occasionally? But that's about it. I know they do quite a lot of these but, again, none occurred during the week I was there so I have very little idea of what they are.

    2/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Yes I would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting to do law because it was very comprehensive, interesting and involved (even though I didn't get much work in my practice area personally. However, I think one has to have a contact in the firm to get on the work experience scheme [easily] so I'm not sure how easy it would be to help someone to get on the course.
