About You
I really enjoyed the vacation scheme at Taylor Wessing- unlike previous vacation schemes I have attended, I was given a lot of relevant jobs to do and it was all actually very interesting work.
The scheme was only one week long, but the HR department and my supervisors made a lot of effort to give us work and provide fun activities throughout the week. I definitely felt valued and it was an enjoyable experience.
My supervisor and the HR department were always available to give guidance or even just to have a discussion about the law in general. The activities that were planned for us were useful and clearly a lot of thought had been put into ensuring we had a well-rounded experience.
A week is not an ideal time period to develop extensive skills, nonetheless I felt as though my supervisor had provided tasks which allowed me to broaden my experience and knowledge in the law- I was even provided with the opportunity to attend court which was a great way to see the law in action. I also learnt a lot about Taylor Wessing as a firm, and what was particularly striking was just how much they valued every single person in the company, whether a partner or assistant.
The Company
The insight was structured well with various different activities every day and a busy timetable so that we were never bored; the activities were varied, allowing us to see different aspects of Taylor Wessing.
Everyone was very friendly and I often had lunch with my supervisors- I never felt alone or afraid to ask questions as everyone is very eager to help and welcoming.
The HR department had clearly put in a lot of time and effort to organise the week and ensured we all felt valued despite the short time we were there.
If I had not spent the week at Taylor Wessing I would have had no insight into the workings of any law firms, and the experience has definitely been valuable. Obviously due to the short time spent at the firm, it was difficult to truly know about a full time role at the company.
One of the activities planned included a networking opportunity, allowing us to interact with various people throughout the company.
After the experience, I definitely want to pursue a career in law and hopefully one day work at Taylor Wessing.
Everything Else
We were provided with free lunches and refreshments but I was not paid for the week.
We were provided with various opportunities for networking and meeting other employees- although even if these activities had not been planned I was introduced to most people in the department by my supervisor anyway and met many people that way.
The networking opportunities that were planned were very useful and actually really good fun- we were treated as equals and I have made useful contacts as a result.
We weren't explicitly given the information but everyone was eager to answer questions and my supervisor did talk to me about the pro-bono activities that Taylor Wessing is involved in.
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend considering a career in law- it has been a great week and despite the short length, I have learnt a lot.
