The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Grant Thornton during the year as my technical and personal skills have been positively tested.
The responsibility I have been given during the year has meant that colleagues have had to place reliance on the quality of my work.
The opportunities I have been faced with during the year have been met with firm support from my Senior members of staff. This has allowed me to explore other service lines and get a better understanding of the Grant Thornton product.
Although there was a seasonal element to the volume of work, the general workload normally involved working overtime at some point during the week.
Due to the philosophy exercised at Grant Thornton I experienced a large amount of responsibility.
This year has enabled me to see how my degree studies would be useful in the accountancy profession.
The Company
The atmosphere in the Southampton office was very vibrant. As you would be normally out at a client's site, when you returned to the office you were integrating with the other members of the audit team. The audit team would always made sure I understood what was required and set me appropriate tasks, which developed in complexity as my year progressed.
My industrial placement had the same structure as a graduate scheme therefore you received the same training and development support as the trainees in the office.
I went to a number of internal training courses aimed to improve my personal soft skills as well as my technical ability. This often involved spending time at the Bradenham Manor facility, which was a great way to integrate with others members of staff.

I am aware of the opportunities within the central and regional offices with Grant Thornton and believe the support is there to allow my career to develop.
The Culture
Socially there are internal and external events across the UK.
Southampton offered good accommodation facilities at a good price. The work environment was very social and there were always opportunities to grab a drink with a colleague from work.
Nightlife was good but limited.
Southampton is a lively city and there are plenty of places to visit and explore.
