The Role
The placement was a really good experience into working life and I had the chance to get involved in some exciting new projects during my time there.
I was part of a new project and I was given my own things to look after so I felt like my colleagues trusted me and I was confident to ask for help as they were understanding that the learning process takes time.
I received most of my support and guidance from other team members as the manager was always very busy. However, I was able to communicate with my manager when I felt like I needed extra support or guidance.
The team I was in had a lot of monthly jobs so the first two weeks of the month were always very busy and the last two weeks of the month would be fairly quiet. There were times when I didn't feel like I had much to do but I asked for extra work and was always given more. The team were very accommodating if I ever felt I had too much work or wouldn't be able to meet a deadline.
I was given responsibility for my piece on a new project which I really enjoyed. I liked being the representative from my team that went to wider meetings with members of other teams as this allowed me to understand what other teams in the business did and how my part in the project was important to them.
The skills I developed are not really relevant to my degree but I have gained and developed valuable skills which will help me after I graduate and go into a full time job, such as communication, problem solving and team working.
The Company
The office was generally quite quiet but people were very friendly and at times it could be very chatty which was nice.
At the start I felt like a bit of a spare part in the team and was concerned that I wasn't learning on the placement. However, I expressed my concerns and a personal development plan was set up for me. This allowed me to monitor my own progress and get feedback from my manager and other team members.
As part of the one year placement, we were given the opportunity to take an internal qualification which is accredited by the CII so this will help if I return to insurance after completing my degree. We were also allowed to take 3 days a year to go on courses for development.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
There are some very interesting graduate schemes on offer from the company which I hope to apply to.
The Culture
I was lucky to have two other placement students that started at the same time as me and the colleagues in my team were very social. We used to go down to the canteen together at lunchtime and we quite often went to the pub on a Friday evening after work.
Guildford is about the average for the South. Renting in the middle of town was expensive but socialising wasn't too expensive.
There are not many night clubs in Guildford but there were a few lively bars and it helped that my colleagues were all very social.
There were a few sports clubs at the company and there was also the opportunity to help plan team away days, Christmas meals and other social events.
